HF's list up to #16 for comparison:

1. Dumba (8.0C)
2. Tuch (7.5C)
3. Olofsson (7.5C)
4. Haula (7.0A)
5. Schroeder (7.0C)

6. Zucker (7.0C)
7. Keränen (7.0C)
8. Kuemper (7.0C)

9. Lucia (7.0C)
10. Kähkönen (7.5D)
11. Gustafsson (7.0D)
12. Phillips (7.0D)
13. Mitchell (7.0D)
14. Folin (6.5C)
15. Graovac (6.5C)
16. Gilmour (6.5C)

- I'm surprised we actually got 3 similar picks - I thought everything would be different after Dumba. Looks like HF ranks more based on overall potential, rather than NHL-readiness, which some of us seem to consider highly.

- They rank Schroeder surprisingly high. Guess we aren't very impressed with Vancouver's sloppy seconds.

- Surprising lack of Kurtis Gabriel.

Gelinas again...

Having seen Schroeder play in NHL games, it's understandable that not many are impressed with Canucks sloppy seconds.

I went with Gabriel. Has a chance to play this year, plus has a lot of good comments from the coaches/management.

Surprised the Graovac ship seems to have sailed. Especially with Phillips at 8.

Phillips is a poor man's Shepard to me, and we all know how that turned out.

Another poor skater from the Q, better hands/vision, minus the toughness.

Is First Round Bust still around?

I feel like Sheppard had hype going into his first (rushed) NHL season, and he's doing fine with San Jose now. The Phillips hype died pretty quickly after his AHL debut. I'm glad Phillips isn't being rushed, and I think he'll catch on eventually.

My prediction is still Mike Ribeiro-lite for Phillips.

Shep doesn't have any hands. Phillips has hands on hands on hands.

The main thing with my list (which is done in some consultation with other staff writers) is keeping it consistent with the grades we've established.

I've had Gabriel as a 5.5B since draft day, which ultimately probably won't be high enough to crack this Top 20. I think he will be a contributor but it's hard to imagine him higher than the fourth line for an NHL team. I like having him in the system though. With all the emphasis on numbers we may forget that leadership and intensity and character are what help (at least some) good players become great.

As for Schroeder, I didn't realize he was even still a prospect as I was preparing this. I think his window as such is pretty narrow but he could also start with the MN Wild this fall. Kind of a wasted spot on an exercise like this but he has some upside for the system.

Kuemper I'm still not sold on making it as a high-end number one guy at the NHL level.

Folin I think we need to see more of against pros. On the one hand he could be a more defensively responsible Jason Garrison type, on the other he could really make a guy miss Clayton Stoner.

Yeah, thanks for the input!

I'm curious what your thoughts are on Bulmer, Phillips, Graovac, Bussieres, Lucia, and Gilmour.

Thanks guys! I do read threads on here from time to time.

Bulmer was a guy whose grade we dropped a bit (keeping him out of the Top 20), not sure it's been updated yet. Looks more like a fourth-liner now but maybe he can stay healthy for once.

The other guys are pretty much as I wrote in the top 20 article. I still think they all have something to offer but that Iowa team needs to be better and I believe it will be.

I worry that Phillips seems to be a pretty complementary player still this far into his career. The end of the first round is a bit of a crapshoot but I don't think it was a great pick.

I think the article probably seemed a bit critical of Lucia too, but I feel like every time I see him he makes a few bad plays when he could probably just muscle guys away. He is young for his draft class and no reason at all to panic.
