Why Was Julius Honka Expansion Exempt?

Was wondering if anybody happened to have a source for this, as I can't seem to find any. Expansion draft rules dictate that if a player has two or more "Full" pro seasons, (NHL or AHL) they are exposed to the expansion draft.

By the time of the expansion draft, Honka had played 68 AHL games in 14/15, 73 AHL games in 15/16, and 50 AHL games (16 NHL games) in 16/17. Wondering if anybody else can shed some light on this with an actual source? I checked the CBA and wasn't able to find anything. Wondering if it has something to do with him being one of the rare players that is AHL eligible at 18?

Someone else can explain it better than me, but it has something to do with ELC slide years not counting. Same thing happened to Fiala.

Yeah, I was wondering if it's just more or less the same exact rules as ELC Slide and the NHL does a poor job of explaining it.

I only ask because I'm interested to see if it effects Zadina being exposed.

(Assuming I'm reading and understanding this correctly) I guess since he was 19 in his first AHL season, that does not count toward a professional season being accrued since it was not in the NHL. Ekblad OTOH, who went right to the NHL was not exempt for that reason.

IIRC, a player needed 40 NHL GP in the previous season or 70 NHL GP in the previous two seasons in order to require protection.

It would definitely seem this is the reason, as it's the rare 18 year old AHLers that are going exempt. Thanks!

Also, due to the ELC slide Honka was still on his ELC, so he was ineligle to be picked. He's still on it this season.

Are ELC players exempt in general? Ekblad was still technically under his ELC but had to be protected.

I think that goes back to Filthy Dangles' post.

Any player still under an ELC for the 2017-18 season was exempt. ie. Nylander, Ehlers. Any player whose ELC expired before the 2017-18 was not. ie. Ekblad, Pastrnak.

Except for Pulock, who was on his ELC and required protection because he played 3 AHL games the first year his contract slid.

It had nothing to do with ELCs, it was about years pro. Their was a slide rule for the non-CHL players in the AHL under 20. Ie Nylander, Honka, ect.

no not quite. had nothing to do with elc. 1st and 2nd year pros were exempt. pastrnak was in his 3rd year of being a pro (more then 10 games in all 3 years) yet still on his elc. so he wasn't exempt. a pro season was having played 10 or more games in nhl. ehlers and nylander were in their 2nd year of being a pro so were exempt. fiala was mentioned because he played 54 games one year but played less then ten in each of the two previous years previous so he too was also exempt. same with honka never played more then 10 nhl games in any of the 3 years prior to the draft.

I'd think so. Same situation as Toronto, where leafs game are hoping Liljeren is exempt

With Liljegren, 19-20 and 20-21 will both be pro seasons. So I don't think there is a way for Liljegren to be exempt.

Sandin, as long as he spends all of next season in the AHL, will be exempt however.

Aren't guys with less than 3 pro seasons exempt? Lilly would only have 2..

Vegas wouldn't have drafted Honka over Eakin anyways....at least I don't think so. :help:

I think they definitely would have tbh. Stars would never have let him go unprotected though. Back then everyone thought he was gonna be amazing
