WC: Why so many upsets this year?

There were a lot of upsets this year. In fact, 5 of the big 7 team lost to a none big 7 team at least once.

France over Russia
Latvia and Austria over Slovakia
Switzerland over Canada, Sweden, and the Czech Republic.

Not to mention some games between weaker teams that could be considered upsets.

Is it just a coincidence to have so many in one year? Or is there another reason?
