Why so many left handed shooting Defensemen?

Often in the NHL a Defenseman will play Right Defense as a left handed shooter but rarely does a right handed shooter play Left Defense. It seems that there are more left handed shooting Defensemen in the NHL than righties. I don't have the exact numbers but maybe someone here has noticed this pattern and can form some stats on it...

Top hand dominance -- right-handedness means the top hand when holding the stick is the right, thus a "left" shot. Since anywhere from 70-90% of the population is right handed, there is a propensity toward left shooters.

I think I read somewhere that it's around 80% Left Shots and 20% Right Shots for all players in the NHL, maybe someone can provide a source.

I think a better question for this forum is to ask which handedness has resulted in more goals? Which glove handedness produces more goalies? Present the data, then we could provide better analysis.
