Why NASA uses hundred of millions of gallons of water during launch

I woke up and it is 1967 again!
We watched the recent launch at work for about 10 minutes and I was amazed at what my young co-workers did not know. They all have degrees in science or engineering.
"What are they doing with all of that water?"
"Why is the rocket leaning over?"
"Why did it blow up?"
These were questions that kids who were 9 years old could answer in the 1960s. Either our media or our educational system or both have done a poor job in recent decades. My co-workers can tell you anything that you might want to know about video games, gaming computers or chairs, multiplayer games etc...
