Why is this team penalized so much every year?

Despite changes in coaches, players, and even systems, this team continues to get NO love from the refs. Im not one to blame them, but the numbers really kind of speak for themselves.

From my post in another thread:

Looked it up myself.

PP time minus PK time

05-06 -8:54 (14th in the league)
06-07 +27:15 (12th)
07-08 -83:02 (28th)
08-09 -24:24 (22nd)
09-10 -46:16 (27th)
10-11 -74:00 (29th)
11-12 -71:39 (27th)
12-13 -17:26 (29th)

So, despite having one of the most dynamic offences in the league for much of that time, at best we were middling, and only ONE year did we have a positive.

Even more shocking to me is that in that same time, Toronto, a lottery team that spends almost the entire game in their own end finished:

05-06 12th
06-07 17th
07-08 15th
08-09 5th
09-10 2nd
10-11 2nd
11-12 6th
12-13 5th

They were a positive in all but 2 years. Really amazing with that truculent team of theirs.

This year, new rules, Refs are a bit jumpy on them. They're calling every single minor thing that they think might cut the needs to the new rules. I hate it.

Stats can be misleading because you could score 10 seconds into a power play and thus register 10 seconds of power play time then the team kills off a minor penalty and registers 2:00 minutes or PK time when in reality it 1 PP for 1 PK

In the same stretch:

Minor Penalties:

05/06: 546, 19th (lowest to highest)
06/07: 438, 11th
07/08: 438, 27th
08/09: 398, 21st
09/10: 359, 19th
10/11: 347, 23rd
11/12: 340, 26th

A few things to note.

The Sens are constantly in the bottom half of the league in terms of minor penalties. Not very disciplined.

In 05/06 the Sens racked up 546 minors... good for 19th. 340 minors got you 26th place last year. The obstruction era died pretty fast.

I have often thought of this myself, i wonder if it is bias, style of play or simply coincidence....regardless it's nice to be able to reference the stat, thanks!

We are a pretty undisciplined team, but the thing that frustrates the hell out of me is when we consistantly get sent off for minors and our opposition gets away with the same thing game in and game out, year in and year out

Undisciplined my ass, I've seen MUCH worse on other teams that consistently go uncalled. Look at the playoffs last year, we were always getting bad penalties against us and in the end on that faithful night we had that one TERRIBLE non call that cost us the game pretty much. Seems to be the case more and more.

The fact of the matter is that our guys don't dive.

Vermette used to draw a lot of penalties because he fell down all the time. More of a balance thing in his case.

Kind of like Letang last night, although the refs didn't fall for it in his particular case.

This..

It happened so often last year where Ottawa would get a legitimate penalty and the other team 10 minutes later would do the exact same thing and no call.. It's insanely frustrating for me, I wonder if the players feel it's the same way?

Zack smith? I love him as a player, but the guy dives.

Actually, almost every player embellishes every now and then.

Does the PP time minus PK time account for amount of called PIMs or served PIMs?

Served would look bad on a team that can convert PP chances: i.e. if a team were to always score 30 seconds into a powerplay and have a perfect PK even an even number of called penalties would look like a 4:1 ratio against them.

Undisciplined and style dont really ft for me. I mean, we have pretty much changed our entire roster in the last 5 years. We have changed our coaches and style multiple times in the last 5 years. Yet we are still getting a **** ton of penalties.

Nice anlysis, SiverSeven. Logic would dictate that skilled, puck-posession teams who control the puck 60-70% of the game like OTT, DET, PIT would benefit on calls.

But reality states that since 1993, Canadian teams ALWAYS get the short end of the stick.

Out of fear of reiterating the unstated obvious which few realize:

Since 1993, Canadian teams are 0 for 20 in Cup wins despite having 7 of 24 teams in the NHL to the current state of 7 of 30 teams. Chance alone would dictate 5-6 Cup wins over this period.

Reality states the NHL has long pegged Canada as a market that will accept defeat yet still gladly
sell out buildings (for an extreme example, see Toronto). Hence the 20-year losing streak with NO MEDIA COVERAGE OR ANALYSIS.

Look at game 7 records for Canadian teams outside of crap-chute round 1. In 20 years, you will find 2 Canadian wins, one being Montreal in a dead-end win vs. Washington in 2009 when the NHL knew a loss to home-ice Pittsburgh in their dream PIT-DET 2008 rematch was imminent.

Canadian teams are actually 0-128 in Cup attempts since 1993. Nobody in the media dare to state these facts, as it will KILL ratings.

I'm sure the know-it-all regulars on here (who bully the informed off) will be quick to argue, heh.

Let's recap Canadian teams from the Bettman era onward, in order of importance to CBC:
TORONTO 0-20
MONTREAL 0-20
VANCOUVER 0-20
CALGARY 0-20
EDMONTON 0-20
OTTAWA 0-20
WINNIPEG 0-5
QUEBEC CITY 0-3 (won the Cup the first season of relocation in Colorado, and gained several years of sell-outs as a direct benefit of prudent Quebec drafting only to regress to half-empty buildings since two inherited Cups from Quebec and HOFers Forsberg/Sakic retiring)
