Why is the Norris focused more on offense than defense?

Should be two trophies for defensemen. The Norris for the best all around Dman, and the Orr for the top scoring defenseman each season.

In today’s fast paced game, defensman making fast smart plays to aid a breakout is super important. The cup winning teams are generally doing so with consistently great breakouts. The “puck moving defensman” is replacing the defensive defensman, and if he can also score more beyond secondary assists, you have a great player.

When a defensman has loads of points you can safely assume a good deal of those are from secondaries, as well as more all round dominating

They’re generally gonna have to take riskier plays, which will of course cost some “bad” goals, but if they’re creating more offense than they’re costing, who cares. They’re a Defensman and it’s a defensmans trophy so... yea.

If anything it should be the opposite. Keep the Norris trophy as is because the few dmen who put up 70+ points are actually very good all around players despite the misconceptions. And have a Selke version for pure shutdown dmen. The same dman could potentialy win both just like you could have a Selke winner take home the Hart. There already is a scoring trophy for defensemen in the Art Ross none of them have just won it recently.
