Rule one, never put your faith in a goalie that played for team Canada at the world juniors. lol
I think hextall wanted only 1/3 of his team to peak at any given moment. Can't have them be too good and risk going deep or too bad and getting a franchise player (almost happened in 2017 but Hextall wisely stopped himself from drafting someone with star upside and took the potential diet Jordan Staal instead)
Yep, he sure blown that one.
Should have blewned it up a long time ago
Pro sports, like other businesses.....the guys that hire a head coach, are the same guys that don't want to fire him. That would be admitting a mistake in the initial hiring.
Blow it up and do what? Replace all veteran players with more prospects and picks? And than what?
Flyers are still one of the only teams to never have a negative cash flow, sub par attendance according to league averages, still average one of the best attendances, and are above average in revenue generated in retail purchases.
Still one of the biggest markets. However, when talking about relevancy to the league, the team hasn’t been there as much.
This reminds me of the present day Habs, are they competitive or are they rebuilding hard to do both at the same time...
For whatever reason, people become overly attached to cores that fail to become contenders. Forever chasing that perceived upside. Rarely does anybody acknowledge that it's their best players who aren't good enough.
They're performing about as well as a team that gives Sean Couturier 22 mins a night should be expected to perform.
ya as secondary players
The Flyers will be fine. Get a goalie and watch us fly.
You act like this team is the Washington Capitals pre-2018. Konecny has not been there for years? Gostisbehere was spectacular last season and he hasnt been here for years??
The only changes that should be made is to acquire a top quality goaltender and traded Simmonds who is wayy past his prime. If you really watch the Flyers, there have been many games this year where they are controlling the play against teams and losing because the other team has a better goalie than they do. For example, two days ago, the "lowly" Flyers outshot Columbus 38-17 and lost because Bobrovsky is the first star of the week. If you ask me, most of the Flyers' struggles can be solved by acquiring a true starter.
I mean, over the last 4 seasons he has 1.92 P/60 at 5v5, objectively 1st line level over that time... and identical to Seguin and Eichel and better than Kopitar, Thornton, Pavelski, Johansen (and more)
Over the last 2 seasons he has 2.06 P/60 at 5v5. 54% Corsi, 53% ExGF, 58% GF... while playing some of the toughest minutes in the league, and averaging 73 points per 82 games.
And also has an argument to being the 2nd best defensive forward in the league after Bergeron.
Though you do have great taste in films.
Last year was the 1st year that the Flyers were not right up against the cap and had some wiggle room. This summer was the 1st time they had room to really look to add any UFA's.
Hextall said he wished that Tavares was open to more spots so he could have tried to add him.
He also said the Flyers finished 2nd for a C....with the expectation that he was talking about Stastny.
He added JVR
If only the Caps had blown it up with 30+ year olds in Ovi, Backstrom, Oshie, Niskanen....
The Flyers only have 4 "old" players:
Simmonds....who is a UFA. Almost every sane Flyers fan wants him traded instead of re-signed.
Giroux: age 30. Still has 3 more years on his deal. Still a top point getter.
Voracek: age 29. Still signed for 5 more year. Was a PPG last year and would be this year if their PP was good
JVR: age 29. Just signed his 5 year deal so has 4 year left.
They Flyers issues are not the top 6 players. It's that they have been waiting on the young drafted depth to fill in the rest of the roster at F, totally overhaul the D, and G.
They were rebuilding without tearing it all down. And now the kids are all starting to arrive but as with kids, they are up and down more frequently than vets. Part of the process. But Simmonds should be gone leaving those 3 and Couts as the "vets" for the kids to lean on. And they could use one on D and in net too. Anyone expecting the Flyers to be contenders right know are idiots. They should have been playoff tweeners this year but have obviously had a shitty year.
Weird how you single out Couturier...who has 83 ES points the last 1+ years....the same as Crosby. Good enough for 13th in the league. Some people just won't accept that he is good because he isn't flashy.
Why haven’t they blewn’t it up yet ??
Couturier can be both a 1st liner and over-played. I mean, off the top of my head, every center in the league that's better plays fewer minutes, save MacKinnon. Probably a red flag right there.
You are the first person to get the reference, or at least mention it.
They hung their captain out to dry, then shipped him off to LA for a couple muppets. LA got 2 Cups out of the deal, and the hockey Gods are going to hold Philly accountable for a while
I have no idea what this nonsense means.
Hard to believe the criticism of the Flyers is that they're being too patient. For years, people loved to dump on them for their perceived instability. Now it's "why aren't they making 1000 moves". And is the OP a Caps fan, of all teams?!?!?! That is, the team that trotted out the same old warhorses year after year, only to have it finally click in year 10? I didn't see any kind of plan outlined in that post beyond "you should trade a bunch of people for some poorly conceived reason".
I mean, it would be nice to have another good C... hopefully Frost can step in next year at 3C. But I think Couturier will always play 21-22 minutes so long as he is as good as he is now... as when the oppositions top guy is on ice Couturier is too, and then also a go to PKer and on PP1.
Haha, my little brother would have got it too, but he is hardly ever on these forums anymore.
Pure comedy that a Washington fan of all people made this thread. The same could have been asked about the Caps if they not won the cup last year.
Give them a Goalie who is consistent and let;s see what happens!
But they did win the Cup
Lol Hart has played in 3 games, bruh. It’s a little early calling him the real deal.
Separate names with a comma.
