Why does Stamkos suck this year?

Which is ironic, because Stamkos was one of the best Tampa players in that series.

Gotta get those burns in when you can, I guess.

He was. Although that speaks more to how bad the rest of the team was. And even Stamkos was only good in spots, really. He completely no-showed Game 7, for instance. So did everybody else, but still.

This is the safe post. Very easy and sure to rack up some likes, but I don’t think it’s correct and tastes of appeasement.

I will make sure I bump it later this season and we will see.

Some of the Lightning fans here have posted some apt explainations that match exactly with the on ice product. I personally think his injuries have taken away any chance of him being elite again, but perhaps he can remake himself. Watching him in Sarnia was some of the most fun I’ve ever had watching junior hockey and I am glad I got to see his career play out.

Yeah. And the thing to remember is we've had this opinion, or an opinion similar to it, for YEARS. This is not a new problem. It's just a problem the league is slowly realizing exists, because nobody pays a whole lot of attention to TB, except in highlights.

Stamkos had his knee destroyed twice. Hes not going to be the same player. Whats shocking to be is he still signed that big deal despite this.

Gm's are crazy.

You're not paying attention. The sample size is 2013-2018.

The OP claims Stamkos sucks.

Between the dates you mention above, he is just under a PPG player. Pretty far from sucking. Yes maybe he isn't at the elite level but he is still a star in this league.

Does he still train conditioning with Gary Roberts in the off season?

If not, there's the reason. One does not simply stop training conditioning with Gary Roberts.

A ton of the guys that train with Roberts end up seriously injured so if he got away he was smart.

I watched the entire game last night and Stamkos is definitely not a world class player anymore, last seasons numbers aside.

The only problem with this narrative is that he has had scored at an elite level since being hurt. And when he was in the midst of that stretch, no one was talking about his diminished skills, see how that works?

A couple of seasons ago when Sid wasn’t scoring, he had something like 20pts in his first 40 games, he went on to have a 85 pt season. All players games change as they age, but Stammer is still in his prime. I think a lot of this is overreactionary.

When he scored 60 he may have been the most exiting, dynamic guy in the league.

I don't care who your team is its not good seeing a guy that good who is still young so decimated. He can still be a quality top 6 center but its hard not to feel sad for what happened to him. Good guy too.

As a NYR fan, Miller is easily better than Namestnikov. Miller gives you more in terms of twoway play and Miller is a better offensive player on his own than Namestnikov is imo.
Miller is much better than Namestnikov but Miller isn’t good defensively and definitely not better than Namestnikov. Miller is also a pretty lazy player

He was so damn good before his injuries. One of the most dynamic players of his era. That year he broke his leg in Boston, he was absolutely lighting up the league up until that injury. He just isn't that crazy good player anymore and it's sad.

When he isn't on his game he's useless. His release becomes hesitant, he forces too many bad passes and he's never been good at winning puck battles. This is what I refer to "passenger mode", when the rest of the teams talent can hide his deficiencies.

However, I will concede that he has had moments post-injuries where he has looked like a 1C. The first half of last year was elevated by Kucherov's hot streak but it would be unfair to not give him credit. He legitimately was one of our best players during that stretch. I have hope that he's still capable of replicating that form.

To become a more consistent player he likely needs to reinvent his game. Settle into his role as a triggerman and maybe even learn to play as a winger.

Yeah, Stamkos doesn't "suck," but I think the discussion is more about his decline into above-averageness than him actually sucking. He's just under a PPG player because TB has done a lot to mask his deficiencies by surrounding him with talent. If he's the best player on a line, I'd put the over/under at 60 points, and I'd probably take the under.

I was shocked at how ineffective he looked in the playoffs and then I was shocked even more when Tampa fans were saying this is the best he's ever looked in the playoffs. He looked like a PP specialist.

I'm a Caps fan and OV has had a couple of down years in his career. OV lost some weight and got some of his speed back a couple of years ago and has a more mature game now. Hopefully Stamkos can reinvent himself some. He should be scoring at least 35 goals every year.

Except TB fans? We've been talking about this literally since he came back from the broken leg. He has not been the same player, and has yet to be our best forward over the course of a season since 2013.

You're watching stats. He had a ridiculous run to start last season, and played very well, BUT the guy on his right was an actual elite-level player, Kucherov, and Kucherov played out of his mind during that stretch. When Kucherov's plays stopped working out, Stamkos stopped putting up points. The vast majority of his ES points last season were assists, and if you believe Stamkos is an elite playmaker, you're not watching him. It was easy to get assists last year when everything Kucherov touched turned to gold.

It's very telling that this is the bar we set for him now.

It seems as he still has the tools, but the mental pace seems to have changed for him thus far. I could be wrong, but he looks to be one of those players who'd be bound to retire as early as 34.

Everyone in this thread is correct, Stamkos is a washed up has-been. On behalf on Ken Holland I would like to offer Tampa Bay a first rounder and Frans Nielsen for him. As a favor I'll throw in Justin Abdelkader to give you some extra depth for your cup run.
