Why does Gary Thorne not have a permanent job in the NHL?

I'll never understand how anyone could ever enjoy Emerick over Thorne. Such a shame he does baseball instead.

I'm guessing the $$$ in baseball is way better.

Any chance if ESPN gets in on the next TV deal he's back?

I was going to say this too. Pays better, and probably just a better gig. Getting to call 5 games a week compared to 1 or 2 hockey might sell me too. Did he really have a full time with the NHL, or was it contract work?

Some of my best memories as a kid in the 90s was hearing that NHL on ESPN theme song come on followed by games called by Gary Thorne and Bill Clement. I don't know if it's the nostalgia talking or because I was a kid so it just stuck with me but nothing since then got me as excited to watch hockey as the combination of that theme song coming on the TV followed by Gary Thorne setting the stage. Hearing him do the Os games just isn't the same.

Because he's not very good. Dude gets stuff wrong and butchers names. He called Manny Malhotra a WHORE over and over again.

Pretty sure I read that he enjoys the slow pace of baseball compared to hockey so for him now he has no plans on coming back.

Good for him, honestly. Found a nice, low-stress job to keep doing what he loves.

I don’t know about that, having to watch the Orioles 162 times a year would probably raise my stress level.

Yeh, sign me up in the 'can't stand Emrick' camp, his voice grates. Thorne is an iconic broadcaster, it makes no sense to me he doesn't even have a local broadcast job, let alone national.

NBC should hire Dave Mishkin for national broadcasts
