Why do the Leafs always choose to go first?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the home team gets to decide if they want to go first or second in the shoot out right?

Assuming I'm correct, why do the Leafs always choose to go first? In baseball the home team bats at the end of the inning because it's an advantage to end the game with a "walk off". Same would be done in hockey with a "walk off" goal. Also the fans would have a better chance of seeing all 3 of their teams shooters.

Does this irk anybody else or am I just a weirdo?

Home team generally chooses to shoot first league-wide, it's not just the Leafs. Gives them a chance to put pressure on the other team to score.

Followed by that duster Kadri.

Bozak didn't deserve the knock, but I don't understand why people think Kadri is good at shootouts.

Every single shootout chance he has had, he has done the exact same move. Every time. Skate in with a little stickwork, get close, fake the backhand, slide to the forehand and shoot. Every single attempt, dating back to his preseason goal on Brent Johnson in September 2009. The way Fleury kicked his leg out knowingly, I am certain that the Pens went over some tape and noticed Kadri's lack of an SO arsenal.

EDIT: John Curry, in relief of Brent Johnson. My mistake. Point still stands.

What about my points that shooting last gives the home team the advantage of the walk off goal and the greater chance of fans seeing all 3 shooters?

Under what circumstance would there be a better chance of fans seeing all 3 shooters? If anything, you're less likely to see all three shooters, in cases where the result is already clinched before your 3rd shooter has had a chance to score.

If you shoot first, the only time that you're third shooter wouldn't take a shot is if you are either up two or down two. In either of those cases, you wouldn't have a 3rd shooter if you chose to shoot last. I believe choosing to shoot last decreases the chance of seeing all three shooters.

I am in agreement with you on rather having the opposing team go first. The likelihood of any individual shot going in is in the 40% range, so you're going to gain momentum by making a big save more often than try to score first.

Nope, Im actually in your corner. I would rather the Leafs have the last shot for the win in the last round of shoot out if tied, not the other team. Seen it way too many times that the other team has 2 shots left and we have 1, and usually they are up a goal. Dont like shooting first but to each their own i guess.

I can't believe people seriously still use the "pressure" theory with going first.

It's constantly pointed out that most of these guys thrive under pressure and relish it. If it makes a difference, it's negligible. I'd always always ALWAYS want to have the chance to win/tie with the last shot. It sucks watching the team we're facing with the chance to win with the last shot in our own building.

Does anyone have a record list for first/last shooter? I'd bet at best it's practically even.

I dont know maybe I ****ed up with the seeing all 3 shooters more often if you go last. I still believe it is more advantageous to go last though. Good point about the bolded I must say.

The first season shootouts existed I belive is the only season where the home team has won the majority of the shootouts (leaguewide) and it is because the away team had to shoot first, the home team did not get to choose.

After the first season, home teams got to pick and I believe ever since then it is the away team that has won the majority of the shootouts every season because more often than not the home team opts to go first.

Don't have stats to support this and I can't be bothered to look. I just recall hearing this mentioned sometime late last season.

I fail to see how they're the same. Not to mention many shootout specialists have a go-to move.

guys that don't like pressure play in beer leagues. guys that do play in the NHL

how would you see more shooters by going second?? if you are up 2-1 after 2 round and you are shooting first the 3 guys scores it's over. 3 shooters

if you are up 2-1 after 2 rounds and the other team misses, it's over. 2 shooters.

been a while since I've been in school but isn't 3 still > 2?

Doesn't matter, we have to score our goals and make our saves. Whether we go first or second. Advantage of going first is to be the one applying the pressure.

I agree. I think what's more important is the order of shooters. Maybe they could've had more luck if they allowed Kadri/Kessel go first then Bozak as the third shooter.

I think this is pretty funny
