why didn't Mario win the Hart in 2001?

sakic had a great season but was it really better than mario?

mario came out of retirement and reclaimed his spot as the best player in the world

jagr ended up winning the ross when he was way out of the race before mario returned

mario put up an absured 76 points in 43 games, the pens probably don't make the playoffs without his comeback

you could say sakic proved he deserved it as the avs won the cup without forsberg, but couldn't that mean his team was just that stacked?

if taylor hall deserved the hart this year, how didn't mario deserve it in 2001?

Yes, yes it was.

Sakic was great offensively (2nd in points), great defensively (2nd in Selke voting), played more games, scored more points, and thus was a more impactful player than Lemieux.

Mario was great, but he was put in a very good situation to capitalize on his elite offensive skills. He was a chess player basically.

Lemieux was 2nd. I think people are too obsessed with the 39 games tbh...

the point is Sakic had an all-time great season and deserved it. Otherwise Lemieux would have won

118 points > 76 points. It's that simple.

And what do the playoffs have to do with the Hart?

Lemieux only played 1/2 the season, and you are actually saying that people are "too obsessed" with that fact? If Lemieux had 110 points, maybe you have a case, but he did not even finish in the top 10 leading scorers that year. If Lemieux had played 3/4 of the season or more, maybe he would have won the Hart Trophy, but not playing just 43 games.

Actual playoff performance does not factor into the Hart voting was the point. Being the best player while your team is in playoff position is a factor.
That post you quoted didn't say anything about playoff performance though.

Oh damn, sorry daver you're right. I just read the part on Mario. Guess I glossed over the Sakic part.

the hart is the player most valuable to his team, right?

the avs would make the playoffs without sakic, the pens wouldn't have without mario

why did hall win the hart when many outscored him this past season? they thought he was most valuable to his team

my point was the ave needed sakic to win the cup, but they didn't need him to make the playoffs

The Pens literally made the playoffs every season for the duration of Lemieux's first retirement that already contradicts your own argument that Lemieux was needed for them to make the post season.

Lemieux when he came back was impressive, but he looked like a dad playing with his kids setting crap guys (especially after Jagr left) up for goals. He wasn't a great skater anymore but still had the hands.

Kind of amazing and sad at the same time.

they ended up as the 6th place team in the east, without him they don't make it
