I believe he was trying to get over the death of his son. Also. Switzerland is a very nice country and I would love to live there
Trying to figure out any goalie mentally is tough enough especially from the no mask era's, figuring out Plante about 10 times as hard.
There's stories about Plante that make Cheevers and Roy seem normal.
The death of his son though is most likely why.
just like to add that Plante visited, worked and vacationed in Europe a lot during his playing days and as a coach he coached in Sweden and a few other places
Why would anyone want to live in the middle of Western Europe, within a couple of hours of Paris, Milan, Frankfurt, Vienna?
I live in London and love it
London isn't for everyone, I wouldn’t want to live there but I will go back and drink there any time
As for Plante, I think he got married for a second time, maybe his second wife was from there?
London, Vienna, Frankfurt are all lovely cities. Paris not so much.
I would say vice versa Except Vienna. Vienna is beautiful.
His second wife was from and still resides in Switzerland. Beyond that he enjoyed the quiet life and anonymity that life in Switzerland offered him. For a man who always valued his privacy away from the rink, it was an ideal place.
If you're interested, in my biography of Plante I offer up much more detail on this time in his life.
If I ever wanted to leave Canada, I'd go to Switzerland too.
