Why are we 9th in our conference?

Are the teams above us really that much better than we are?

And will this make it all the more difficult to get into the playoffs?

To answer the OP:

Because 8 teams have more points than us.

:p:

Am I the only one who feels nonchalant about these early season games? At some point, they'll activate beast mode, burst into the top 8 and then get ready for the playoffs. As long as we're within a couple points of the playoffs around the 60 game mark, we'll be fine.

This.

We have a .647 winning percentage, which works out to 106 points over 82 games. In 2011-2012 (last 82 NHL season) 106 points was good enough for third in the west, fifth overall, and we'd have won the division by nine points.

No way we stay ninth in the conference if we keep this winning percentage up.

But that same logic can be applied to the teams above us, yes? If they maintain their respective winning percentages, we're doomed! :help:

Nope. They've played more games. Lower winning percentage multiplied by more games (see VAN) would project a lower final pt total.

Put another way. We're 2 pts behind VAN with 3 games in hand.

Van is the only team in front of us that has a lower win percentage than us. What is scary is the fact we are 10th in the league in win percentage and only 2 teams from the east are in the top 10. TB and Boston.
We just have to win this road trip vs the east and then take the 2 games at home right after vs the east. We have our next 6 vs the east.

It could if they maintain their winning percentage (minus Vancouver, as noted above).

That said, that's why I said as long as WE maintain our winning percentage. The odds we maintain ours and finish with 106 points aren't really that odd. The chances of eight other teams, especially the likes of Colorado and Phoenix, maintaining thier winning percentage is obviously much less likely.

Colorado hasn't played a single team from the Pacific division, also you can count on one hand how many against the Western Conference.

The West is feasting on the East, and their weak ass teams. The standings will even out once the West starts playing each other.

Never buy into how teams play in October/November/December...

It's Jan/Feb/March that determines playoff teams.

you must be new here. this is not new for us kings fans.

Genius Slacker Theory

One of my theories is that we have a team full of (or with a higher proportion of) talented guys who work hard only when they have to.
Think of it this way, this is these mens' nine to five job. Some days, you're just not on the ball. Others, you are. Its human nature. Maybe they stayed up late because their baby was crying, or stayed out late a buddies birthday and they didn't want to seem like hockey has changed them and wanted to be there for an old friend. You never know. Maybe they went out, or were having nasty time with some hottie all night. Point is, lots of things preclude these guys from doing their jobs well consistently during regular season games (relatively less meaningful games). We see, near the end of the season and in the playoffs we bring it.

Now everyone has players that bring their all 110% every night (some argue these guys are more likely to burn out near the end of the season and in the playoffs), I think we just have more of the guys who are selective with their efforts, or simply, party harder, stay up later, stray from their fitness routines more during the regular season. BUT when we coop them all up in a hotel room. they bring it.

Looking at winning vs the West Kings are 7-4 for third best Ducks 7-1. Sharks 6-3

They have actually played 2, Ducks and Flames, and are 2-0 vs the pac.

Hmm missed that, still they have played mostly teams from the East, Colorado has a tough schedule coming end of November...

I expect some losses.

There is no doubt they have had an easier schedule than some. They have played against 2 top 10 teams in winning percentage to this point. That would be the Ducks and Bruins. And with both them they have only played 4 games vs the top 10. Not that we are much better only having played 6 games vs the top 10 to this point.
