The older they and their music gets, the less attention and new fans it attracts. That and the fact that older fans already own their music so selling the rights is the last big check they can squeeze out of it.
Also could very well be this is their last chance to really cash in big like that. Streaming, youtube and the rest killed the recording and music business as it was before. There's nowhere near the money there used to be in it. Once people get used to not paying for things, they won't start paying again willingly.
More power to them. It's their work, if they want to sell out then that's their right. Death taxes shouldn't even exist, so good on them for gaming the system.
