    *2018-19.

Every year we're bount to have a team, usually buoyed by a hot goalie or breakout seasons, that was expected to miss the playoffs but surprises everyone:

    2008-09 Blackhawks
    2012-13 Maple Leafs
    2013-14 Avalanche
    2014-15 Flames
    2015-16 Panthers
    2016-17 Oilers
    2017-18 Avalanche / Golden Knights

    etc

Who fits the bill this year?

I think Vegas is really gonna shock everyone in 2017-2018. Laugh now if you want but I can guarantee this.

Buffalo if Hutton pans out. A more realistic option for me would be Philly. I think they take a divisional spot, with a serious chance of passing the Pens or Caps.

I think Cam Ward does a way better job at filling in while Crawford is out than the backups for Chicago last year and they compete to potentially make playoffs.

Everyone thinks they will be bottom feeders of a tough Central Division, but I don't see it.

I think Philly and Montreal will surprise.. Philly is considered a playoff team, but I think they have a shot at fighting for number one in the division.

Montreal on the other hand, is considered a bottom 5 team. And for whatever reason, I have a gut feeling that they will fight for a spot and end up 9th or 10th in the conference.. Even though that's the worst place for a rebuilding team, I believe it will be quite a surprise with respect to where most people project them to end up.

We don't get an HM for last season? Really? Meh.

Anyway this year it shouldn't be a surprise if we make it back to the postseason.

My vote would be Arizona or Montreal.

If Raanta or Price get really hot, they can potentially steal a spot from an expected playoff team.

I have my Isles fighting for a wildcard spot so I'll go with them.

Buffalo seems like a smart pick, adding two great young rookies. Both should compete for the Calder. If Eichel is healthy all season, they should be solid.

Not necessarily a surprise team this year. I think the Avs might be really good, depending on a few players (Zadorov, Jost, etc.).

Our bottom six sucks though, 2nd line is below average as well unless Jost and Kerfoot or whomever took a HUGE step. And we don't have the depth to deal with injury in our farm system. Let's not forget that Jared Bednar led the team to a 48 point season just two years ago, I don't trust him.

I'll go with the Flyers too.

    Senators pass.

We've had enough surprises for this year.

Phillip actually had the division lead towards the end of last year. Then the caps pulled away after the flyers cooled. Looks like only the canes and flyers got better from last year as well. I would still bet the flyers finish 3rd to Pitt and wash but I could see a 2nd or 1st finish if they can avoid another 10 game losing streak etc.

Our bottom six is great! But you’re comety right about the 2nd line.

The one thing that makes me opptimisic about the Avs last year is we didnt depend on a goalie to carry the season like we did with Varly and Andy.

Pure speculation, but Buffalo. They're young and have a number of very high upside guys that could hit - Dahlin, Mittlestadt, Reinhart, to name a few.

Also, I like Berglund and Sobotka as solid veteran depth. In past years, they'd be filling those roles with the corpses of guys like David Legwand and Brian Gionta.
