You think he would have been top 10 ALL-TIME? He played for quite a few seasons before the eye injury and he was not anything like Potvin, Robinson, Coffey, Park, MacInnis, Chelios - there is no chance he was making the HHOF. His highest potential was Gonchar but not quite as good overall if he had a longer career with one eye.

Berard was/is a decent D-Man but I don't think he is/was better than Redden. He has a very good goal scorer for a D-Man.

Did you watch him in his early days before the injury? Some of his highlights with the Islanders and Leafs are downright awe inspiring, making end to end rushes, schooling some very good NHLers and looking amazing while doing it. He was raw, but he oozed talent from day 1. Save the eye injury, and put him on the modern day equivalent of the 1980s Oiler and Islander teams Potvin and Coffey played on, and I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be as good a player.

No. Coffey was the 2nd greatest offensive defenseman of all-time, regardless of his team. Potvin was not only a great offensive player (who was on his team in his sophomore season to pad his stats when he scored nearly a PPG and led his team in scoring?), but also a fantastic defensive player, unlike Berard.

There's no way. Just no way. Other than in a "anything is possible" train of thought..

FIFTEEN seasons of 30+ goals... EIGHT seasons of 40+ goals... 708 goals in his career...

Yeah, agreed, far from great... :help:

No question Gartner deserves props for consistency and longevity - but he was consistently `just`good. Bourque and Messier at their best were light years ahead of Gartner. In fact, Bourque was consistently better for longer than Gartner. Messier definately petered out before Gartner did, but his best years were far better than Gartner`s - not to mention the playoff success.

Gartner is a great player by virtue of his ability to play at the same level for a LONG time - but he`s not in the same category as Bourque or Messier.
