i cants see dubas moving hap. we need him for depth.
If he ends up the odd man out from the top 9, he becomes a very expensive 4th liner.

Right now the bottom pairing D is a real concern. Needs upgrading, and something will have to give with the cap issues

A 4th line should be made of muckers and grinders and your top PKers and have someone to make abusing JT and Marner something that makes the opposition think twice.

As the season progresses the only way to beat the Leafs is to beat them in the alley and use and abuse Leafs star players through physical play and intimidation, which in a game or over time will take its toll.

I wouldn't worry about the lower end of the lineup too much until Hyman and Dermott get back.

I swear I would love to have 1 shootout specialist and 2 PP specialists (faceoff guys maybe) and just run with 3 lines. Prob wouldn't work but I think it would be cool.

i disagree. you dont win or lose on 4th line players. all you need from them is a lack of mistakes from a crew that will play between 8 and 10 minutes a night. who cares how big they are they have such little impact on the outcome of a game.

montreal has one of the best 4th lines in the league and its occupied but 2 of the smallest but most dependable players in byron and weal.

umm byron and weal are part of the habs 4th line???

well, just those 2 alone eat up 4.8 MILLION in cap space , so ya , not hard to have a good 4th line when you can spend like that on it.

all we can afford are 3 guys in the 700k per range.

The best players - ideally the ones who can put the puck in the net.

Let the majority of the league run energy lines -if the Leafs can get regular offensive output from their 4th line that's a huge advantage on other teams

Our 4th line really shouldn't be an issue once Hyman is back, we are going to see one of Mikheyev, Hyman or Moore on that line but for few games both Johnsson and Kappy should see some time on our 4th line, nothing is earned until you prove you have

What we really need to think about is team toughness (both mental and physical). Our offense is one of the best in league but we need to get better defensively. The roster we have is what we need to use properly (and nothing wrong with this roster) and every one need to understand their role(s), you can't score 5 / 6 goals every game, and even after scoring those goals you can not win every single game unless you take care of your own end.

After this season we are going to need money to add to our "D" as only Rielly and Sandin are signed from current roster. We have Mtthews / JT / Mitch and Willie playing on our top 2 lines (which is good enough to carry those 2 lines and I strongly believe that Mikheyev, Hyman and Moore, they all can play can play on these lines

Next season we are going to have about about $14 M at current cap ($81.5 M), assuming next year's cap hit go up by a million we will have close to $15 M in hand to spend. As I said earlier Hyman, Mikheyev, and Moore are quiet capable of filling in our top 2 lines with one of those playing on our 3rd line. If we trade both Johnnson and Kappy next season for drafts / prospects that would give us another another $6.5 M in cap hit. With $21,5 M cap (if utilize properly), you can certainly sign both Muzzin / Barrie (or any other quality "D") for say $15 M, the rest you can spend on signing Mikheyev, Dermott, a backup goalie, added toughness, PK and then you have some players ready that are waiting to be promoted

I really have nothing against either Kapanen or Johnsson, but it's all about team and our needs at certain areas. I understand both Johnsson and Kapanen can generate some offense but how superior they are as compared to Hyman, Mikheyev / Moore. Losing either or both Kappy and Johnsson is not as significant as compared to adding to our "D" and toughness. The offense shouldn't be a big issue with our big 4 earners

Once Hyman is back and the depth gets appropriately pushed down, then I expect Goat and Spezza to be locked in on the 4th line.

Last spot is probably Moore, who maybe deserves better. But that's a good problem that deep teams get to have.

I can't believe how well Gauthier is doing this season. I had completely written him off. If he can play like this all year, I'll be glad I was wrong.

I dunno but 3rd line I would like to try Kerfoot at center with Mihkeyev and Korshkov two big wingers that can skate have some hands and both like to go play directly infront of the net, especially Korshkov likes to screen the goalie. Korshkov and Mikey like to lay the body as well, both are 6'3 or 6'4 200+ lbs and are both Russian. Just my humble opinion but Kappy and Johnsson are the weak links on their respective lines. Hyman is one of the best on the forecheck, he always seems to take the body, grab and win the puck and pass to Mathews or Nylander
