McDavid and Mackinnon are the top end talent that could realistically win a cup if they drag their mediocre teams to the playoffs. Once they are there, having a top 3 player league-wide can make all the difference.

Everybody knows the Leafs are one good RD away from a dynasty and in the offseason Nyl gets traded.
So he won’t raise the cup whereas Kapanen, Matthews, Marner etc. will.
