Who, quietly, had a very impressive season?

Not really sure what you were watching all year man.

Where would you rank ERod in terms of forwards this year?

Sheary was 4th in the team with 34 points. ERod finished with 29. Much better in other aspects though.

He isn't every going to be a goal scorer. He can be a good 3rd liner. His speed and playmaking ability is a huge asset. Useful PKer and very versatile.

I honestly don't know what you were watching to come to the conclusion that is a putrid player. Mixing up him and Sobotka?

Thought Mikael Backlund had a pretty underrated season for the Flames. He receives almost zero notoriety for what he does. But for a 2nd line center who plays almost exclusively as a shut down specialist, he had an incredible season at even strength. Put up 0.56 even strength points ppg which is right up there with guys like Kessel, Johansen, Teravainen, Skinner and etc. Also ended up with as a +34 which is tops among forwards in the entire NHL.

Don’t know if I already posted here (I’m sure I did) but Rasmus Andersson and Derek Ryan for the flames. 38 pts for a 4th liner is solid, and Andersson really improved in the 2nd half and even took top pairing minutes when Brodie really struggled or injuries hit. Really liking his upside.

If our 2nd pp unit wasn’t total ass, he likely breaks his career highs in offense.

Possibly, but Backlund was also not playing on that unit for a lot of it. I remember that unit consisting primarily of Bennett, Neal, Ryan, Brodie and Andersson.

Not as impressive as some of the others, but Darnell nurse put up 41 points this year after having only 46 in the last 3 seasons combined.

Not bad for an oilers dman.

Teuvo Teravainen and Jonathan Huberdeau are the only correct answers to this thread. Holy hell I did not know how impressive they were this year.

Honorable mention to Jake Guentzel.
Honorable mention to Esa Lindell in Dallas. Hell of a player.

Tervainen and Huberdeau are still the ONLY answers to this.

Draisaitl - Getting 50 goals in a garbage team is damn impressive. Hopefully he and McD can escape the joke sooner rather than later.
Robin Lehner - From 3.01 / .908 last season to winning the Jennings trophy and posting 2.13 / .930 is nothing short of a miracle. Hopefully he gets the Masterton trophy too.

Man I remember how hyped he was at one point after the draft.
Then, how he was labelled as a bust. He's got it now.

--- Picks from 2007 -2017 I believe --- (10 year span best worst)
Each team's best and worst draft picks

Worst Pick: Brett Connolly, Round 1, Pick 6 in 2010
Eight of the top 10 picks in 2010 were forwards, and if not for a hip injury Connolly might have been in the running to be the first player taken. Rushed development, injuries and a difficult adjustment to the pros have made him a disappointment at the top level.

Alex DeBrincat 41 goals, 35 assists, 76 points, a buck over 17 minutes avg ice time / game
- from 30 & 40 (50) goal scorers he had the least ice time per game.

He did get plenty of ice time more what to his rookie season; from 14 minutes to 17 minutes,
next season hoping for at least 20 minutes avg of ice time.

- it would be foolish not to expect 50 goal, 90-100 point season from him

From the sophomore's, Alex was by far the best,
1. DeBrincat: 76 points, 2. Connor: 66 points, 3. Barzal: 62 points, 4. Dubois: 61 points, 5. Strome: 57 points

_________________________

Most goals in a single season (2016 draftee):
1. Laine 44 goals, 2. DeBrincat 41 goals, Matthews 40 goals

Most points in a single season (2016 draftee)
1. Tkachuk 77 points, 2. DeBrincat 76 points, Matthews 73 points

__________________________

PS. Alex DeBrincat played as a 20 and 21 year old this season .

I dont think the you should be using "expect" in this case. Instead, we should be "looking out" for Debrincat to hit these totals, as you should not expect an unproven thing, even if he is looking pretty spicy.

Colton Parayko. He was the Blues best and most consistent defenseman this year. Lots of stat-watchers claim he's been bad, but it's actually been a career-best year.

I didn't realize any of these guys hit the totals they did. I feel like there were a number of "under the radar" seasons this year due to the high scoring.

Dylan DeMelo in Ottawa had a really good season. For a guy who had a hard time getting a contract this offseason he looks like a steady #4 on did a good job as Chabot's partner on the team's top pairing.

Derek Ryan just had a really nice career season. Work hat on every night, faceoff man, special teams... 1st line, 2nd line, 3rd line, 4th line... whatever you need from the dude, he got it done. He had a streak of over a month where he wasn't scored on 5v5.

I think Travis Hamonic and Noah Hanifin fall under this category though.
One dude that everyone on this forum laughed about, when Calgary spent a first and two seconds snagging in Hammer. His best goal scoring season, coupled along some elite defensive D metrics (with a fairly bad 5v5 SV% on ice).
Noah Hanifin, we kept hearing how Calgary got this sheltered, bad thinking, lack of IQ player that didn't live up to his draft position. What we got was a guy who made our second pairing absolutely elite; who got buried in Calgary in terms of zone starts, had a career points season and who was a big factor in us being the second best team in the NHL.

Not “very impressive” in terms of elite players, but relative to skillset level it’s hard not to be happy about Tyler Bertuzzi scoring at a 24 goal + 50 point pace.

He gets a lot of value relative to his talent level
