I figured with the hockey summer doldrums upon us, I'd run a poll each day on who people think is the best Sabre to ever wear a particular number.

I went ahead and skipped from #10 to #12 as only one player ever wore #11 for the Sabres and will ever wear #11 for the Sabres and it's the incomparable Gilbert Perreault.

There are 20 players who wore #12 at least once. But to narrow it down, I'm only going to consider those who wore the number at least a full season for a reasonable number of games. Sorry Gary McAdam, Jody Gage, Ken Priestlay, Scott Metcalfe, Greg Paslawski, Peter Ciavaglia, Bob Errey, Peter Ambroziak, Domenic Pittis, Mark Mancari, and Kevin Porter.

Only consider how that player played while with the Sabres - so, not their NHL career in general.

I'll stick to the main numbers for which players are known.

Polls will allow voting for two days and I'll post the latest results in each poll.

Results so far:

#1 Don Edwards 77.4%
#2 Tim Horton 96.4%
#3 James Patrick 45.7%
#4 Jerry Korab 52.6%
#5 Mike Ramsey 84.9%
#6 Phil Housley 81.0%
#7 Rick Martin 98.2%
#8 Jim Lorenz 38.1%
#9 Derek Roy 91.3%
#11 Gilbert Perreault BYE

Had a hard time choosing between Savard and Kotalik. Probably the hardest choice for me so far.

Gary McAdam belongs in the poll for #15. Not that he's gonna win or anything, but he needs to be represented there.

Also, I would have gone with 22 for Vaive.

The fact that nobody’s pointed out that it’s “Skip Krake”, not “Drake” doesn’t bode well for his chances.
Kotalik, mostly because he represents the last time we could score in a shootout.

I have McAdam in for #15. Not that he will win, but that is where I have him.

I should have put in Vaive at 22 and at this point I will but it won't let me edit polls after they are posted, even with the Admin help.

Oh, and poor Mr. Krake.

Cool. Hope I'm not nitpicking too much. I'm really enjoying these polls. They're a great way to pass the time in the offseason when there's not much going on. Thanks for doing them.

How Andre Savard is not winning this poll is baffling.

I thought the same thing. Dunno if it's recency bias or what, but Kotalik wasn't even that good. He had 2 assets (one-timers from the point on the powerplay and shootouts), but the rest of the game he'd be invisible.

Yeah, I think it's generational too. Way more posters here likely saw Kotalik play versus Savard who doesn't show up in many highlight reels.

Savard was a very competent lunch pail type of player as I recall. Kind of player who today would fill out and stabilize the bottom 6. (No bottom 6 back then.....) Got McNabb out of here too.......
