Caverns of Draconis
Niedermayer Weber
Pronger Boyle
Keith Doughty
Seabrook

Our d corps in 2010.

Keith Weber
Vlasic Doughty
Bouwmeester Pietrangelo
Hamhuis Subban

2014 Squad.

Canadian defensemen aren't what they once were. We peaked in those two Olympics. Hopefully a couple prodigies in the pipeline come up soon because there aren't that many good players right now.

I mean.... Cale Makar is having the best Rookie year for a Dman in 30+ years.

People are just looking at the defense and thinking it's shitty because they're very young. Give guys like Makar and Chabot 2-3 more years to develop that defensive game along with the offense and they will be elite, elite level Dmen just like what Doughty, Keith, Weber, etc. were for Canada when they were 25 years old.

Makar has a shot to be one of Canadas absolute best Dmen over the last 30 years.

Reilly - Pietrangelo
Doughty - Giordano
Chabot - Parayko

7th D - Makar, Ellis, Burns

(These aren't the pairings I'd use, but just the top 6 they have IMO)

1998 & 2002 were pretty good too (and I'm not including Canada Cup teams)

1998 - Bourque, Blake, MacInnis, Stevens, Pronger (tho not at his peak yet), Foote, Desjardins

2002 - Blake, Niedermayer, Pronger, MacInnis, Brewer, Foote, Jovocop

Im surprised to see Parayko finally getting some love, if you are going to put a lot of these purely offensive d-men on your team, someone like Parayko would be a needed, somebody has to kill penalties. I like the balanced approach

Rielly - Hamilton
Burns - Pietrangelo
Makar - Letang
Dumba

edit.

BTW, surprised to see that USA has a better d-core as of now

McAvoy - Carlson
Slavin - Jones
Krug - Petry
Werenski

Why is McAvoy over Slavin?
And Petry/Krug over Werenski/Hughes?

This would be my American D:

Slavin - Carlson
McAvoy - Jones
Petry - Hughes

Werenski as the 7th guy

Giordano - Letang
Doughty - Pietrangelo
Burns/Hamilton/Weber/Spurgeon

A lot of RHD.... where are Canada's LHD?

In terms of TOI this yr...

Chabot
Rielly
Keith
Giordano
Chiarot
Morrissey
Nurse
Theodore
Muzzin
Bouwmeester

other notables include Girard, Vlasic, Brodie and Sanheim

Yeah, it's pretty bad. I do think Chabot, Rielly and Giordano would all have a pretty reasonable shot at making the team, though.

As a Pens fan who is continually perplexed with how Letang stacks up to the rest of the league's defenders, this thread interests me.

A national top 6 containing Rielly is not a great top 6.

He'll probably be the second best offensive defenseman option after Makar and is an elite skater which helps on the bigger ice. If you put him with someone like Parayko that can take a bigger share of the defensive load, that would be a great pair.

I like the lists with Morrissey and Parayko. Even as a Leaf fan, I would rather see those two out over Rielly if the team is already stacked offensively.

Chabot - Pietrangelo
Rielly - Parayko
Morrissey - Makar
Doughty

I like this one, it is nicely balanced.

Letang would definitely be in the top 8, maybe top 6 discussion when 100% healthy. I am guessing he supplants one of Rielly or Chabot if he makes it.

This looks good. They wouldn't bleed goals like a lot of the others lineups posted so far.

Canadian Dmen picked top 10 after 2008 (Doughty/Pietrangelo):
2009 - Cowen
2010 - Gudbranson, McIlrath
2011 - Hamilton
2012 - Murray, Reinhart, Reilly, Dumba, Pouliot, Koekkoek
2013 - Nurse
2014 - Ekblad, Fleury
2015 - N/A
2016 - N/A
2017 - Makar
2018 - Bouchard
2019 - Byram

It's too early to judge 2016+, but there was a solid 8 years where Canada only really produced Reilly as a true 1D. A lot of busts on that list. Ekblad was supposed to be the Doughty/Pronger/Neidermayer kind of anchor on the blueline but injuries derailed his career.
