problem with that is the Rangers are not bad at drafting in the 1st round

McIlrath and Huge Specimen created this notion

Depends on the time table you're looking at.

2006: Bob Sanguinetti (45 games)
2005: good pick
2004: Al Montoya (168 games)
2003: Hugh Jessiman (2 games)
2002: no 1st round pick
2001: Dan Blackburn (yeah, injuries) (63 games)
2000: no 1st round pick
1999: Pavel Brendl (78 games)
1998: "good pick" given the alternatives
1997: Stefan Cherneski (0 games)
1996: Jeff Brown (0 games)

Penguins suck at drafting overall

Letang, Goligoski, Moulson, Murray, Maatta, Muzzin, Guentzel, Kapanen, etc. disqualify Pittsburgh from being the worst drafting team. Not sure if you're fishing for compliments though.
They've only really botched the Pouliot pick recently. Most of their high picks were consensus picks.

The Oilers haven't truly "hit" on a player outside of the 1st round since Jeff Petry. And that was 12 years ago.

The handful of other guys who have managed to crack an NHL roster are bottom line/pairing guys, the vast majority of whom flame out of the NHL sooner rather than later.

Lots of Oiler fans like to say that things have turned around under Chiarelli... the only player we've drafted under those guys who has succeeded in the NHL so far is McDavid. Not sure you deserve much credit for that pick. Need to see some dividends in the NHL before I'll believe the drafting has turned around.

That is a very unimpressive list for a 10 year period. Shero was absolutely terrible at drafting. We wasted picks on so many friggin puck moving Dmen that never developed into regulars.

Good god, I still remember watching the 2010 draft... What they were thinking walking up to the podium before the pick I will never understand. Lmao

And I was thinking he might've be there for us @ 25.

What if I told you that, in the last 20 years excluding top 2 picks, (If you can't hit a home run there you don't deserve it) Pittsburgh has drafted ONE Top six caliber forward.

Other than Guentzel, it's pretty brutal.

I bolded some players that brought value to our team. Some obvious, some through trades or some that would have if not for injuries.

Please tell me what value schmucks like Beau Bennett brought to our team? Scott Harrington? Hell, even Jarry.

Bill Armstrong for the Blues has been extremely good given the spots he's been picking in the draft.

Fabbri
Edmundson
Parayko
Kyrou
Thomas
Dunn
And others who look good so far (Thompson, Kostin, Walman(had a bit of a rough year), Husso)

They were all post 20 OVR and a lot of them were late first/2nd with Parayko being a 3rd. Schwartz and Tarasenko were 14th and 16th

That's awesome... if that was the thread topic!

I meant to edit my Pittsburgh criticism post to add that, to be fair, Detroit has sucked at drafting defenders over the last 20 years also.

Excluding Kronwall, the top three defenders they've drafted over that time have been Jonathan Ericsson, Kyle Quincey, and Brendan Smith. :help:

Though FWIW I'm not including Jiri Fischer, who probably would've been even better than Kronwall if his career hadn't unfortunately ended at 25.

Bergevin sucks at drafting. Bob Gainey was good though.

The Habs were better at developing talent ubder Bob. We flat out suck under Bergy

Still craps all over some other teams like Vancouver, New York Rangers, Florida outside of a few higher picks, LA over recent years, etc.

Scott Harrington was a part in the deal with Phil Kessel.
Jarry is our backup goalie.
Bennett had injury problems.

Oh yea, Harrington was the big piece in that Kessel trade. He was a thrown-in; the trade would have happened without him.

DeSmith is our back-up goalie

Is Bennett even in the league anymore? He’s never had any value.

I rest my case, the Pens have been awful at drafting since Staal, and even he was the wrong pick.

I am not sure why you're calling this an "unimpressive list" ? Also, I'm curious why did you leave out the bolded players that I included to your list? Those are all legitimate NHLers (Archibald hasn't had a ton of success, but he did play in the Stanley Cup final and has his name on the cup). I also underlined a few guys who are NHL mainstays that you didn't indicate as "good picks". I feel like you're being a bit too harsh on their recent draft history. They've found strong NHL players in later rounds, some of them have even contributed to the recent cups.

Some of the ones who haven't contributed to the Penguins directly (kaspanen, harrington, Morrow, Samuelsson) were shipped for good returns, so it's not really fair to say that they "drafted poorly" in regard to these players because they were still good assets that were exchanged for other good assets so they were still good draft picks in terms of value.

It's too early to analyze any picks 2015 or sooner, considering that they weren't even 1st round picks, so it's not really like they were highly touted players who busted. It's not even possible to fairly evaluate them yet.

I think that Pittsburgh's best aspect of drafting is more in finding talent in later rounds.

but i have to give Shero credit for seeing where the game was going. mobile dmen are the name of teh game today and he was ahead of the curve in that regard. The pouliot pick was a head scratcher but other than that i can't fault him for his other attempts. You also have to look at where you guys picked. personally I htought he did well considering how late you picked.

This is another great point. I'm not sure why he expects the Penguins are going to get slam-dunk picks drafting late in the first round every single year. Since 2007 they've had ONE pick within the first 20 picks of each draft (and they traded up to #8 Overall to get that pick)...
