teams like TBL, WPG and WSH get a lot of praise for their drafting. Which teams are crap at scouting and drafting?
Stars, Especially during the Joe McDonnell and Nill era. Take away a lucky lotto pick and they've got 0 NHL talent in 4... soon to be 5yrs.
Took a goalie in the 1st round, Passed on Barzal and Connor for can't hack it in the AHL Denis Guiranov and then made some stupid ass he's a top 5 talent "no question" comment about him.
Just a trainwreck

Verdict still out on Robertson of course.

Nichushkin was/is an alright player and at the time was the right pick. And i can't fault him for that pick really, but if you look at their entire tenure of drafting
We Have

Hesikanen

Maybe Robertson
Nichushkin

a bunch of scrubs (Gurianov, Dickinson, Honka, Tufte, Elie, etc)

Hell they took a goalie in the first round with a dire need for scoring wingers and Tolvanen/Kostin on the board.

Also of note
McDonnell wasn't made director of Am scouting until july of 13 (after the draft with Nichushkin)

Isles were attrocious in the top 10 under Snow. Those are picks you can't afford to miss on. He missed on them with a frequency rarely seen. Luckily, he somehow bailed himself out, even if they didn't officially return the value of the spot taken. For example, they turned G Reinhart into a 16th overall pick and a 33rd overall pick. Luckily, the player they got with the 16th overall pick, is playing like a top 5 pick (if not better). He turned Niedereiter into a good 4th liner. Strome was a disappointment for them but that was turned into Eberle (for atleast 2 years on a good salary). I also wasn't a fan of their high-risk approach late drafting kid with serious character issues that other teams wouldn't touch.

Colorado hasn't been good outside the first round basically since 2009. But I do have high hopes about our last 2-3 years of drafting. Think we've started emphasising skill and speed more and it's hopefully gonna pay off.

The Oilers, though both departments have improved since Chiarelli and Keith Gretzky took over.
They drafted McDavid, and Puljujarvi has been a mild disappointment so far. Ethan Bear and Kailer Yamamoto have had cups of coffee in the NHL. What has Chiarelli done exactly?

Dallas is a strong choice here; Nill arrived with so much promise landing Seguin in summer 1 but the drafting has been largely unproductive.

The Canucks have a long history of sucking in the draft however reading some of these posts is therapy for me !! However Canucks have to be bottom ten in their draft history for sure.

I know you don’t follow the Oilers closely, most people don’t follow prospects closely of other teams.

But a lot of players drafted since 2015 has been trending upwards. Entire 2017 draft class were signed to ELCs.

Stuart Skinner outplayed Carter Hart in the WHL finals, Wells bounced back with the Pete’s, both should be pro this year.

Maksimov, Safin, Benson, all had good years as well.

He turfed most of the scouts and brought in people who know what they are doing. The 2017 draft looks like it might be a real good one.

Things are much better than they were. For the first time in forever the AHL team next season will have more than two or three prospects on it who have actual NHL potential.

Not going to argue too loudly because you’re right about rounds 2-7. But at least we didn’t miss on the top 10 picks(so far). Some have.

I mean the 2000s were pretty bad for us (I mean just two NHL caliber players from the first round for 10 years is pretty bad), but its gotten a lot better recently. Gaudreau was a 4th round pick, Ferland in the 5th, Monahan and Tkachuk have been good early picks, Fox looks like a steal in the 3rd round, Andersson was a solid 2nd round pick, ect.

And he was rewarded with an extension this season. Imagine being horrible at your job and getting rewarded for it. Nill's buddy/old boy's club, that's why.

Bill Armstrong for the Blues has been extremely good given the spots he's been picking in the draft.

Fabbri
Edmundson
Parayko
Kyrou
Thomas
Dunn
And others who look good so far (Thompson, Kostin, Walman(had a bit of a rough year), Husso)

They were all post 20 OVR and a lot of them were late first/2nd with Parayko being a 3rd. Schwartz and Tarasenko were 14th and 16th

I've heard the Penguins, at least in the past. Not sure how true that is now, especially with their recent Cup wins...

Oilers drafting high a range of years and then finding themselves in the situation that they trade Hall for Larsson, that is a sign of bad drafting. They had all the chances to fix the defense problems but went with drafting along the logic of "best in general" not "bests for us".

rangers are not a bad drafting team (bottom 10). It is overblown because they trade their 1sts. Vancouver is legit bad

also Anaheim is the best drafting team but not in the OP shows how underrated they are
