Bill "Doc" Carson had a very successful career as as player, winning the 1921 Allan Cup with UofT and scoring the Stanley Cup winning goal for the 29 Bruins. At one point he was among the higher paid players in the league.

Somewhere along the line he got fed up with Conn Smythe and pro hockey in general, and retired to become a dentist (which is what he was at UofT to do in the first place).

Gretzky, Selanne, Don Cherry have restaurants. Not sure how much they are involved. Gretzky also has a wine label and clothing label.

Gordie Howe had a clothing label as well I believe.

Chelios, Ray Bourque, Lafleur, Souray all own or used to own restaurants too. Seems like a popular choice for NHL players. Don't know how many went beyond a single establishment.

Roger and Bill Christian and their brother in law started Christian Brothers Hockey sticks out of Minnesota. They were good sticks at a good price.
Darius Kasparaitis co founded Veszasca Group down in Florida. They don't just develop buildings, they build communities.

Owen Nolan co-owns pub in downtown SJ (Britannia Arms)

Mike Rathje co-owns restaurant in SJ (Three Amigos)

Another ex-Shark has a restaurant in Los Gatos.

I know a number of former players with real estate and/or insurance (franchise) companies.

Former Shark started indoor exercise (and roller hockey) in southern SJ. Dave Maley.

Ryan Reaves co-owns brewery. Just got (unanimous) approval to open brewery/restaurant in downtown Las Vegas.

A few guys have clothing lines.

Others are self employed and teach/coach skating, hockey, etc.

Edit: Alex Hult was the restaurateur.

Marcel Dionne owns a memorabilia shop or something like that.

OT but Lindros has done really well in retirement. Didn't start a business, but his parents, who were obviously control freaks, actually really helped him out a lot. They took care of his finances and invested in the right things, now he lives just as he did when he was playing without having any extra income.

Many times I have been thinking why some of these athletes bother going into any business? You have money invested and if you get bored, just go to work

several have--they just do not going around pumping their own tires

You have a lot who have gone Jimmy Carson path and become financial advisers (Carson is reportedly a good one)
Daniel Berthiaume owns a successful fishing business
Tiger Williams for years ran a successful construction company (I worked for him on and off for two years)
Lee Fogilin also ran a construction company
Pat Hughes ran several pizza joints while he worked for the Buffalo PD

Sometimes its a life long passion, or a friend needs start up money for their business. Plus not all players want to go back to the game and coach/work in management.

IIRC, Tom Tilley and Paul Cavallini owned a store in Chicago. I think that it sold leather goods, like jackets. Tom finished his career with 3 seasons for the Chicago Wolves after playing in Milwaukee for 2 seasons. He overlapped with Paul's brother, Gino, for one season in Milwaukee.

I think that they all met while playing for the Blues in the late 1980s. Paul retired from hockey in 1995.

Wayne Gretzky had a chain of restaurants didn't he?
Gretzky also has a very successful winery (now producing whiskey and beer as well) in Niagara-on-the-Lake, recently partnered with Peller Estates.

(FWIW, Tim Horton Donuts became successful long after Horton himself died.)
