This is for a non-specific, generic draft year. Obviously some years the drop off between tiers is huge. Assume you have none of this information.

First overall.

For my team those are the only picks we tend to not screw up (with the exception of Yakupov lol).

The only thing I find enticing about the 5 late 1sts is that it gives you a crazy amount of resources to make trades. You probably can't get an elite player unless you move all or most of them, but you could theoretically add an entire top-6 line at the trade deadline if you are pressing for the cup.

That said, 1st overall is tough to turn down.

Mario Lemieux, Lindros, Crosby, Ovechkin, McDavid, Hall, Kane....Even taking the busts that come with first overall, this really is an easy choice. Teams aren't going to tank for picks 28-32.

Holy shit 2016. The disparity between #1 and #4/5 is hilarious. Saying that as a fan of the team who took one of those guys

It seems like the "right" choice is 50/50 between 1 OA, or 4 OA + 5 OA
When the BPA is not considered a "generational talent", the right choice is likely 4 +5

I voted 4th and 5th but looking at this maybe I should have gone with 1st overall.

2010: 1st
2011: 1st
2012: 4th + 5th
2013: 4th + 5th
2014: 1st
2015: Tough call but 1st for me
2016: 1st
2017: 4th + 5th

1st overall easy. Nearly guaranteed getting a franchise player. 4th and 5th are good players hopefully (with a good chance one of them won't make it big) but those later picks are just fringe players or AHLers more likely. You can get them on waiver wire.

Im sorry, what? Lol, McDavid >>>>> Marner + Hanifin
If McDavid ends up being a ~120 point center while Marner ends up a ~100 point winger and Hanifin tops out as a top pairing defenseman then it's not nearly as lopsided as you're saying. You can disagree but these guys are still young and defenseman usually don't hit their prime until their mid 20s so saying it could be close isn't all that crazy.

I said 4&5 for my team given that it already has it's core players. I like the trade capital and high-end reinforcement potential that gives. That said, if I knew there was a Lafreniere level prospect in the draft then me answer changes

If my intention is to draft 1st oa 100%
If im considering trading - this gets more interessting.

Im not 100% which package is worth more. I think 1st overall is worth more than 4 and 5 but im really curious about what the trade value of 5 1st round picks (even late ones) is in comparison.
