Which of our big three FA's would you be willing to give up?

Couldn't disagree more.. HAvlat is gone no matter what he does. If DW can move Havlat if/when healthy he will.. Havlat is UNRELIABLE....

Agree with the top half though:naughty:

If that were true, he wouldn't even talk about playing him but we both know that you can't have a reasonable discussion about it.

Food for thought.

Here are some current benchmarks:

Generational player $10mil
Franchise player $8mil
First line player $6mil

Using your metric, wouldn't all three of them be easily able to claim 6 million? Only Boyle is even close to a reach.

Franchise is a ppg player at least for centers. IMO, that is a tall order for JT. There is also a TOI minimum, about 19min (better that it be 21-22min). They won't be able to maintain their scoring pace for the full season. The issue for Boyle is TOI. First pairing is 23-24min with the amount of PP TOI he gets. <21min is definitely in the territory of PP specialist. Marleau would have to get to the ~35 goal territory to begin to think franchise. And, they are all older which carries with it an anticipation of a drop in production and a concomitant drop in pay. Marginally meeting or just missing numbers won't do it. I do think that Patty and JT will be able to claim first line numbers at least for the first year of their next contracts. The high end PP specialists get $5.5mil.

I do think that the higher cap will move the benchmarks. And, I won't complain too much if all the GMs are moving the compensation levels. For purposes of discussion here, I will assume the old benchmarks until new ones are established.

Sort of OT, but I'd love to know why there weren't more offersheets thrown around this past summer. Is it because there's a taboo around it, or because players just don't accept them?

Little bit of both. I think gm's use them as a way to stick it to another guy (DW/Bowman) to get what they want or just do it to entertain us (Feaster).

Don't forget cap shrinkage.

You also get the premium on offersheets. A GM will pay more than production warrants when offersheeting a player in most cases. A few GMs strongly lowball RFA players which makes them liable to offersheets. I am waiting until Lombardi gets hit with one. Poile is a big lowball guy as well. The former GM in Florida (not Tallon) was a lowballer. Regier in Buffalo and Sather with the Rags are lowballers. You can get the rare cases where a GM is capped out which is what DW did to Bowman.

There is also the thing that an RFA player can't really use an offersheet to leave his team. His team can match an offer and then he is stuck. All the player can do is request a trade.

I thought it was a cagey move by DW. It seemed like he was either going to get a starting goalie (Nemo) or a top 4 dman (Hjalmersson). Forced Bowman's hand.

Because he continues buying high priced UFA's, I am going to laugh so hard when Sather loses a guy like Stepan because of his lowballing which is as persistent as his flirting with the cap. I figured Stepan would be the highest profile target this past off-season. The Hawks are being a bit more careful about flirting now. Sather needs to watch out because his scouts are pretty good for forwards. His RFA compensation rates are generally lower than the rest of the league. Let's see what he does with Girardi's contract coming up.

It will be interesting to see going forward. Girardi is a pure defensive dman..even moreso than Vlasic. I think he will get an Anton Volchenkov like contract but hes had a ton of miles on him due to his play style. I think smart gm's will be wary on his term.

Girardi blows. Product of his partner, whether it's McDonagh or Staal. Had one great year in 11-12 but has been meh since. Kind of guy that is done at age 32. Smart GMs will steer clear.

Easy,

Stepan is actually the exact guy I had in mind. I was shocked he didn't get an offersheet. He's worth way more than he got. He should cash in if he's smart.

I think OS is the way to go when a guy is a lot better than his production says. Ryan O'Reilly was a perfect example. Sure, he may be a "50 point guy", but he's worth a helluva lot more than that, he's Patrice Bergeron-lite.
