Im a big Kharia fan but 2012 is the most disappointing draft because of Yakupov.

Yakupov "should" have been the premier goal scorer this franchise still needs.

I would think 2012 is the worst draft for a few clubs. Terrible draft.

At the top it was one of the worst drafts ever.

I'd give an honorable mention to the 2007 draft (outside the realm of the OP I know), but that draft really could have kickstarted things for the Oilers with 3 first round picks.

Gagner
Plante
Nash

Gagner was decent enough, but wasn't the offensive catalyst we were hoping for. Plante was an outright bust. And trading up to get Nash who wasn't even ranked in the 1st round IIRC and we never even got a game out of him. He's carved out a decent career for himself, but we ended up with nothing out of it all.

Bleh.

And to think our pick was Yakupov, Murray or some speculated trading down for Reinhart.

That pick was a bust from the start.

Are you talking worst draft in hindsight or draft that was a disaster from the moment it happened?

2007 and 2012 are 1-2 for me respectively.

You have 3 first rounders and nothing comes of it.. just unacceptable. Plante was one of the worst 1st round picks of all time and a huge reach at the time. Nash doesn't look like a bad pick, just couldn't sign him. Gagner was developed horribly, Voracek clearly the better player though.

Tough to look back on it but the Plante pick specfically is one that everyone knew would backfire. I mean, imagine your 15th overall pick having 6 total points including playoffs the next season.

If the Oilers had drafted like 27 overall in 2012 they probably would have had an equal player like they had 1st overall, but less complaining from everyone about x 1st overalls in x years.

The correct answer is "All of them." the Oilers have a stunning inability to find NHL players unless gifted a first overall pick and even then that's not always a guarantee with this team.

Outside of McDavid 2015 is up there for me as well. The fact we traded those picks for Reinhart never sat well with me and seeing what Barzal is turning into makes it sting worse.

In reality our drafting in 2007 was disappointing as well. 2012 hurts because I had so much hope for Yak but I think that we were screwed regardless.

 The where a 5th round pick is contributing 2 years out from the draft? ugh.

I think 2015 was still a great draft that could have been transcendent if 'you know what' didn't happen. We got Bear and Jones. And perhaps Marino could still turn into something. Are they going to sign him?

2007 would be my first choice. 3 first round picks with Gagner becoming a journeyman player and trading up for Nash only to have him not sign with us. 2012 is the second worst because Yakupov became the biggest 1st OA bust in NHL history. What saved this draft was our picks from round 3 on.

obviously 2007...3 first rounders and Gagner is the best of them...Plante and all-time bust and Nash never wanted to sign here

2012 is close though...despite Yak busting, management wanted to take Murray #1 or even Reinhart #1....woof!

2015 is tough because McDavid amazing but will always have the Reinhart trade asterisk besides it simply because it could have been mcdavid and a player vs mcdavid and nothing.

I'll go with 2012. Oilers always get jeered but not like Murray or Galenchuk are worth first overall

The 2015 NHL draft. This draft should have setup the Oilers to be a dominant team. We could have used the #16 and #33 pick to draft some excellent players.

At #16 any of Barzal, Connor, or Chabot would have been excellent
At #33 our rumored guy was B. Carlo. A top 4 RHD. Do we make the ill fated Hall trade if we had him in the pipeline?

What's even more disappointing for me is that one decision altered our franchise forever. If Bos accepts the trade of #16, #33, and #54 for D. Hamilton our team is set. We don't make the disastrous trade for Reinhart. We probably wouldn't have traded Hall the following year for Larsson. That one decision altered our franchise forever.

Yes we might not have Talbot but might have been able to acquire him with 2016 picks.

I still rather have Barzal/Connor/Chabot + Carlo than Hamilton but I could have lived with it as Hamilton would have provided exactly what we need right now and perhaps would have resulted in Hall still being on the team.

Honestly how good does this look (I'm assuming we keep Eberle as we likely wouldn't have signed Lucic if we still had Hall):

Maroon-McDavid-Eberle
Hall-Drai-Pulj
Caggiula-RNH-Slepy
Khaira-Letestu-Kassian

Nurse-Hamilton
Klefbom-Russell
Sekera-Benning

Talbot

We would have had two dominant scoring lines. We probably could have afforded to move Nuge to strengthen our backend even further. We would have had speed and skill throughout the lineup.

The 2015 NHL draft will haunt me as a fan for a long time. Yes we got McDavid but we could have got so much more.

In hindsight the best thing we could’ve done is drafted Reinhart....then the 2015 Trade never happens...lol

no kidding

I remember the Oilers brass being super high on him at the time...then when Bob Green (Oil Kings GM) joined the Oilers in January of 2015, we see why they traded for him in June of that year

I said this in my post above but we wouldn't have made the Reinhart trade if Boston accepts the picks for Hamilton trade. And we don't likely trade Hall if we had Hamilton. Which also means we don't sign Lucic.

And Boston probably trades Hamilton to us if we have MacT at the helm. So this all goes back to Bob Nicholson hiring Chia lol. And if we don't sign Chia we still keep our 2nd round pick that we had to give up for him. But I don't want to this thread de-railing into a Chia thread so lets just ignore what I said :)
