With this whole virus thing happening, I've been watching the 2011-12 Flyers/Pens series.

Forgot the fact that the Flyers bottom 3 dmen that season was Grossmann/Lilja/Bourdon

So I ask you guys this: which bottom 3 would you rather have at their respective times?

Thought it would be interesting to take a look at statistically... just from those respective years:

11-12:

Bourdon: 48.92% ExGF, -0.31 ExGF Rel
Lilja: 48.84% ExGF, -0.32 ExGF Rel
Grossman: 44.36% ExGF, -0.66 ExGF Rel

17-18:

Manning: 49.52% ExGF, -0.09 ExGF Rel
MacDonald: 48.18% ExGF, -0.19 ExGF Rel
Hagg: 47.12% ExGF, -0.28 ExGF Rel

So I mean, it is probably 11-12 that was worse... even though I dont remember them being "as bad".

But maybe that is because:

Grossman: 18:25 TOI
Bourdon: 16:11 TOI
Lilja: 13:41 TOI

MacDonald: 19:51 TOI
Hagg: 18:08 TOI
Manning: 17:57 TOI

In 17-18 the three guys putting up pretty poor numbers played ~7:30 more ice time a game between them

Tough question, kind of like which pig wearing lipstick would you rather kiss. Grossman and Lilja were just as slow as molasses and were completely cooked by then. I went with the recent guys as being better.

You nailed. Usage is the critical variable.

Which is why I've always opposed piling on.
Scrubs play because there ain't much else, notice Hagg this year 49 of 69 games, 15:36.
And that primarily b/c Ghost was playing hurt, then was shut down.

However, come the playoffs, Lavi basically ran his top two into the ground:
Coburn 27:10, Carle 25:19, Kimmo 20:11 (year before 24:54)
Pronger was gone, Meszaros only played 1 game.

Grossman 18:55 TOI
Gustaffson 15:30 TOI
Lilja 13:58 TOI
Bourdon only played one game.

Yeah that's a great point. Usage is huge. My god, Hak.

I mean both sets are pretty bad, but one set was relied upon a lot more in some insanely crucial situations.

Lilja wasn't being actively sent out against Crosby throughout a playoff series, for instance. So my memory of the recent set is that they got slaughtered harder because of how they were deployed.
