Defense is the weakest part of our team atm. Removing Liles and/or Gunnarson from our team without getting another d-man in return will only make us weaker. Once Gardiner can return to form and become a regular in the lineup, only then can we consider moving one of our d-men.

Liles isnt that special defensievly, I'd have no problems with him being traded. I agree on Gunnar though, the dudes easily our best defensive D so trading him would leave a massive hole on an already leaky blueline.

I'd say Liles/Franson. I believe our next trade will be to bring back a carlyle type defender to suit his system. Makes me wonder what will happen to MacA. guys think we should move him?

At the moment I feel as though all are needed. Kostka and Fraser are career AHLers so its tough to say what will happen with them. The rest are still in a tryout phase for the most part.

This could easily change by the deadline depending on where the Leafs sit in the standings.

If/when Rielly makes the team I feel like he will be Liles' replacement.

I like Kostka as a person and he hasn't been playing bad by any stretch of the imagination but I'm just not sure if he fits long term. I'm leaning towards "he doesn't".

Looking at it from another perspective, to me Phaneuf, Gardiner and Rielly are the only true keys going forward. Franson might be included if he plays consistently.

I'm gonna be the first to say this,Mark Fraser will be our physical shutdown defender as long as Carlyle is coaching the team. The reason being is thats exactly what is right in front of everyones noses.

I'm not to sure though how many see it,or know it. I would take another though to boot. We don't have a comparable in the system or Roster on defense.

I'm talking a top 4 defender not a bottom pairing guy and Fraser will never be a top 4 defender

And we only need one of them while also knowing who of them will pan out?

We drafted Morgan Rielly 5th overall because we know he will be great.

Gardiner is redundant with Rielly close to NHL-ready.

This team has bigger holes than an offensive defenceman (we have too many anyway).

We need to identify the center or goaltending positions.

Use 2013 1st round pick, Gardiner and Kessel for that.

How is he redundant? Two defensemen who can skate that well and make plays are twice as nice.

The amount of people who think Liles is a bottom pairing D-man is hilarious. Most 5 or 6 D-man can't put up 40+ points consistently.

Dion should never play with either because he sucks defensively himself and adding Gardiner or Rielly wouldn't help with that.

Gardiner and Rielly together would get eaten alive by NHL forwards so they can't play together.

And that means that one of them is going to have to play third pairing minutes.

Factor in Liles too, and there's just too many offensive/PP specialist defencemen on this team. Way too many.

Trade Gardiner and identify actual holes in our roster rather than wasting a potential asset on the 3rd pairing.

14th in PK
26th Goals Against

Are those our stats so far this season?

14th ranked PK is the best its probably been in 10 years!

Considering how well Reimer has played in every game - 26th GA is nothing to be proud of.

Indeed!

I don't think ROR is going to be an offensive powerhouse by any means.

But, if I'm building a team, I build it with solid offensively, potentially elite defensively forwards.

All-around players win championships. Just my opinion.

ROR also has leader written all over him.

And if we had him, we'd all be talking about how we need that anchor at the back, aka Dion.

To me, ROR is a slightly better Bozak
