Where would Gonchar at his prime be in the modern NHL?

Yeah, we're talking a guy who was still playing 2 years ago, was the clear #1 defenseman on a Cup winner in 2009, 4th in Norris voting a year earlier...

1D, 2D, anything else?

He would be one of the top offensive defencemen just like before of course. Or has the game changed so completely in the two years since he retired that he would have no chance?

Well, his last decent season was 2009-2010. I think, his prime was between 2000-2008. Not sure, it's very modern.
Keep in mind he was 35 in 2010, and so 36 the rest of the way. We're talking Coffey with the Flyers territory.

He was also decent in Ottawa. They made the playoffs twice with him as a big minutes eater, and because of Karlsson's injury he was really the #1 defenseman in 2012-13. He was still a capable puck mover.

It's tough with guys like Shore, Cleghorn, Seibert. Throw Gonchar in with that crowd too. With the time machine, lets take a prime Gonchar and put him on say the 07-08 Penguins. I'd reckon he'd finish with around 12 goals, 53 assists for 65 points. Probably playing around 25:55 a night, shooting 6.9%. Probably rack up about 66 PIM. I think he'd probably be good for 4th in the Norris vote.

It's such a crapshoot with those old guys though. None of us saw him play, we've just got the newspaper clippings to go by.
