Not enough cap space for any big names to land in Van. Expect a few small signings.

Except, apparently, there's a CBA provision where teams can go over the cap by up to 7.5% (applying it to next season) to sign players 35+...

Good. I don't want a hyped Clarkson. He's been wound up by the hype machine the last 6 months

I believe only for bonuses, which are permitted only on 35+ (and ELC) contracts. I'm not sure if there are restrictions on what percentage of a contract can be bonus-tied (you've played 4 games, here's $1M!!!).

EDIT: That wasn't worded very well. It's my understanding that a player's base salary must fit under the cap, but that there is a "bonus cushion" of up to 7.5% of the cap that can be applied against next year's salary, if bonuses are triggered that push a team over the limit. This cushion has been around for a while, but with 13-14 being a low ceiling year with the expectation that it will rebound in 14-15 there's a lot of interest in using as much of that cushion as possible.

We'd need to magically move out a whole lot of salary to sign one of Clowe and Filp, let alone both and Stalberg.

With Grabovski now available, I say Gillis targets him. 3-4 million for a 2/3 year contract as a 3rd line center with the upside of possibly playing wing on the 2nd pair line if needed? Defensive and a warrior with offensive upside?

Hell yes. Gillis should get on the phone right away. Even if it means swapping Booth for minimal pieces later when the opportunity presents itself. I wouldn't even be upset if we basically just swapped Ballard's contract with Grabovski. Make it work GMMG!

I would love too see Mueller sign here as a 3C/4C. Matching his 1.75 cap hit last year for someone who can contribute 25-30+ points would be nice.

So if we don't add anything significant in FA, have a lot of posters just accepted the team as being bad next year? I thought the Torts hire was meant to signal squeezing a couple more years out of this core. Confusing, I really have no idea what the direction of this team is right now for the first time in a long time.

Right now it seems to me that Gillis doesn't want to improve the team to give the current core a chance, nor does he want to move core pieces for a speedy rebuild.

You would think that this lack of cap flexibility would make people want Gillis to be fired way more than any of the goalie stuff. That's how I feel anyway.

IMO we are 2 top 6 forwards away from not fighting for a playoff spot this year in the new division.
