Where does Marchand rank as a playmaker?

After his first NHL stint where he recorded 1 assist in 20 games, Marchand became a consistent ~25 assist player his next 6 seasons, never topping 28 assists. All in all he was a 0.31 assist per game player, with a low of 0.23 in a season and a high of 0.40 (in the lockout-shortened year). Then, in the next 4 seasons:

2016/17: 46 in 80 (0.58 A/GP)
2017/18: 51 in 68 (0.75 A/GP)
2018/19: 64 in 79 (0.81 A/GP)
2019/20: 51 in 60 (0.85 A/GP)

He only ranks behind McDavid and Kucherov stretching back 3 or 4 seasons for assists/game.

I see McDavid, Kucherov, Crosby as my top 3, and then a bunch of guys just outside that group (Marchand, MacK, Drai, Panarin, Malkin, Marner, Wheeler), with him being near the top of that second group

If you mean playmaking to mean creating offensive chances to score then he's top 10 without question. Top 5 is debatable. Top 3 Azz-hat tho, no doubt.

Top 10 easily, every team would want him if he became available.

I would take him....but I would also keep him away from my ice cream ;)

He's in the top 10 for sure. His status as an agitator makes him a very unique player though on top of that.

Do people mean all time or of active? I don’t think he’s top 10 in either.

McDavid
Drai
Marner
Kane
MacKinnon
Crosby
Kucherov
Panarin
Pettersson
Malkin

All playmakers I'd take before him.

Now if you say active playmaking left wing, I'd say you're on to something.

Top 10. Debatable if he's higher, but I think there's a bunch of guys you could argue over one another: McDavid, Crosby, Kucherov, Marner, Malkin, Kane, Draisaitl, Panarin.

Marchand's 4th in assists this season, before which he's been at least as high the past two, but somehow he doesn't belong in top 10? By what merit?

Up there. Top 10. He’s an electric factory

I know you’re a fellow B’s fan and what I’m about to say isn’t intended as a criticism- but marchand must have the most threads created about him in the history this site, right? Gotta be 100+. The combination of elite skill, nonstop pestilence, and being a part of/rival to all of the most represented bases on here have to make this true

What an odd choice of argument... This list features Spezza, Koivu, and Statsny. I thought your top 10 was reasonable, but could see argument for Marchand ahead of Marner or Pettersson.

The poster brought up that he was 4th in assists and I just showed how the stats don't tell the whole story.

I think the point is you need to evaluate a recent yet substantial set of (recent) games to assess where a player would rank in a current skill list. Marchand has been a top of the league play maker for a few seasons at this point so "Where does Marchand rank as a playmaker (in today's league)" shouldn't be a career stat situation.

I can't believe how many people are saying he's a Top 10 player. He's only 7th in scoring while with on the same line as Pastrnak at 2/3 and Bergeron. Take Pastrnak off and he doesn't even crack Top 15.

Top 20.

I clearly outlined the progression, Marchand being a 25 assist guy for the first part of his career doesn't translate to now lol.

Top 20.

Take Marchand away from Pastrnak and Pasta wouldn’t be inside top 50.

On topic:
1. Mcdavid
1.5 Kucherov
2. Marchand
