JP, it's been a while since I've had a good debate (a couple of days, which is a while for me) so I need to know...what didn't you agree with?

The Kevin Stevens comment was the only thing. I don't think he had a higher peak value since he only peaked for about 5 years in his entire career. Only 5 great years out of 15.

Shanny has been pretty much great his entire career. I mean, he never had 123 points (only hit over 100 once, but Stevens only did it twice) but, really, what did Stevens ever do better than Brendan?

Everything else I agreed with you on. I just think that Stevens is vastly overrated for his 6 good years he put in at the NHL level. He could've had 6 good/great years, but he only played 27 games in 94/95 (albeit it was a shortened season, so I guess he had a solid year that year).

Iginla in his prime was the best player in the NHL for at least one season and one playoffs in a differnt season. Shanny was never the best player in the NHL, nor was he ever even in the discussion. And he wasn't in the discussion of whether he was the best player besides Mario and Gretzky.

Who was Iginla better than in his best season 2001/02 when he won the Pearson, Art Ross and Rocket Richard and almost the Hart? Sakic, Yzerman, Mario, Jagr, Pronger, Niedermeyer, Lidstrom, Forsberg, Naslund (in his best season), Bertuzzi (in his best season), Sundin, and Shanahan among many other future HHOFers.

Not that I disagree with you, but Naslund and Bertuzzi's best seasons were both 2002/2003 (Both were first team All-Stars and Naslund won the Pearson).

Maybe top 100, putting him in the top 30 seems insane to me.

As far as left wingers go I would go a little farther than GBC and say that the talent level drops after Hull and Lindsay. I have a hard time placing the big M with those two...I'd say Mahovlich belongs in the next tier with Kharlamov and (keep in mind the cup rings) Dickie Moore.

:sarcasm:

In all seriousness, he has over 600 goals. That's an accomplishment in today's game. I'd guess top 75 for sure.

Shanny is a heart and soul guy. Does everything well. I dunno how high to put him but he's a guy I would want on my team.

I could go as high as top 100 all time :sarcasm:
One of my favorite players of all time, and one of only a handfull of players to score 50 goals and 200 pim's in a season.

In terms of peak, I think Stevens was a better player at his best than Shanahan. The problem is that Stevens only had a two, maybe three-year peak before suffering that terrible face injury in the 1993 playoffs.

At his best, Stevens was unstoppable. A very strong skater who skated through and over his opponents. He had a great shot, great hands for deflections and was unmovable in front of the net. While he scored 40 goals the year after the face injury (note: he twice scored 40 in seasons that Lemieux missed more than half the season) he didn't have the same edge, the same physical dimension, that he had before he got hurt.

IMO he's between 75-100 all time. Not many players have had his totals of Gs, Pts and PIMs. Can you imagine those numbers if he didn't play in the LW lock system for all of those years? The cups come first and foremost but I really think he would have hit 50 at least 3 more times. Chip in the intangibles and IMO he's one of the more under-rated players of all time.

Plus he still has one of the best one timers in all of hockey.

Extremely high, if youd rank 37 y/o. ;)

Always been a very good player and defenitly have had a All Star career.

At the same time, youd could question if he ever even have been the best player on his team, besides the year he missed the PO's with HFD.

I wouldn't put him on top 25/50 lists through all times. As a player he aren't that great. Not if you compare him with someone like Jagr in terms of talent.

But there are other cathegorys, and I am sure Shanny would rank pretty darn high in allot of them.

Iginla's peak had him leading the NHL in goals and winning the Hart trophy. So where was Shanny's peak that was better than that? Just Wondering?

Jarome Iginla had a peak season of one season and then he's been back to sub 75 point seasons. In contrast, Shanahan's peak encompasses encompasses 2 50+ goal campaigns as well as 4 campaigns of over 40+ goals as well as participation on three Stanley Cup winners. Shanahan has been at a very high level since 1992-93, and is still going strong.

So he led the NHL in goals twice and he only has one peak season? I am not saying Iginla is better or worse than Shanahan. I responded to the post that someone made that Shanny's peak was far higher than Iginla's. It clearly wasn't as in different years Iginla was the Pearson trophy winner - voted most outstanding NHLer by THE PLAYERS THEMSEVES. Which makes him the best player in the NHL - for a year at least. And in another season he led the NHL in goals and brought a relatively mediocre team ton the 7th game of the Stanley Cup finals where he was clearly far and away the best player and most dominant and important player on that team.

That is a better peak than Shanny ever had... if only for a few seasons.

That's more what I mean with him. His peak was VERY short lived.

****, Shanny is still peaking to this day. It's almost like he's been on a "peak" his whole career.

Where would you guys rank him for his era, and all time amongst forwards?

Shanny was one of the first players I ever saw play when I started watching hockey and what a great power forward he was. He would crush you with a body check, rocket a shot past the goalie, and then beat the crap out of you all on the same shift. Here late in his career he's not the same imposing figure but he will still get into a couple fights a year, and oh yeah still pop in 40 goals. He's a great leader, he's been everything you wanted in a hockey player for most of his career and is definitely one of my favorites.

For the era, I can't think of a better power forward, Neely had a great peak but Shanny is as good if not better and he has longevity in his favor. You look at a guy like Jarome Iginla who may be the preminent power forward in the game today and he's really not close to where Shannahan was at his peak. Bertuzzi had a nice little run but that didn't last long.

over the last 20 years he would have to be amongst my top 20 forwards.

I think Shanny is right there among Power Forwards, I would still put him behind Neely for his era but that is another debate. I also think Iginla is closer to this level then you are giving him credit for. He is on this level the rules just prevent him from having the physical impact that Shanahan or Neely had in regards to fights and PIM's
