When will we see Bergevin make a major move

Hey guys,
I'm kinda new to HF boards (last posted a couple of YEARS ago). Used to love the discussions happening here. I think that Bergevin should get rid of some of the "old guard" (i.e. Plekanec, Bouillon). I know Plek's is a consistent point geter but I think we need to make room for some fresh taken. I obviously think Desharnais' contract was a big mistake. From what I'm seeing from the team this year, it look alike we're in for a long season unless some major moves are made. How sweet would another top round pic look alongside Galchenyuk, Gallagher, and Eller?

Welcome back then.

I think you can get rid of Plekanec when someone can replace him without sacrificing major depth. In our case, we can't. Boullion and others? Absoutely.

As for another top pick. Oilers mastered this technique and its not working. I'm not opposed to strong asset management and getting 1st and 2nd rounders for assets we don't need but I'm not sure tanking is the way to go. In 2007 habs drafted McDonagh, Pacioretty and Subban. I'd take this type of talent again and it's not a top 5 pick. We can still compete and acquire talent.

Who will replace Plekanec? When you're on a 5-3 PK, who do you send out?

When you're playing a bona-fide #1 Centre, who do you put on the ice to check his line?

If you're talking about the Leafs, Peter Holland and David Bolland are not major moves. David Clarkson is not a major move. They are desperate moves. The leafs have a mandate to win now. They don't rebuild. Those moves all involved throwing away high picks/prospects for players that can play now.

They missed the playoffs for 9 years and got absolutely embarassed in round one last year. They need to win now.

Geoff Molson isn't MLSE. He preaches patience. Even with the pick that got us Galchenyuk, that mandate wasn't 'trade it away for someone who can play now' ala Phil Kessel.

So far he is just making a lot of little "nothing" moves like Gainey used to. I am not sure I want to see Bergevin make a big move, my confidence in him is low.

Don't have enough assets to make a "major move", without gutting the team and messing up our core. Only valuable assets we have are Subban, Price, Eller, Gallagher, Galchenyuk, and maybe Plekanec and Emelin. God forbid MB trade any of these guys or every single spastic hab fan would piss their pants, cry, and riot.

Ill welcome bigger moves in about 2 years. No sense making any bold moves now. It's only year two of the rebuild.

Well according to Capgeek we'll have around 11m AAV at the deadline if he's willing to make a move to improve the team going into the playoffs. Unfortunately, I don't think adding 1 or 2 players to this team can make us a contender.

He inherited a young team with some very good players, and a lot of average to bad players. He's made a few moves, and he still has a young team with some very good players, but a lot of average to bad players. He seems to want to fix the issue of having a lot of average to bad players through patience and the draft. So it doesn't look like he'll be making any major moves.

As of now we'll have around 21m in cap space this offseason. If he signs Diaz to 3m, Subban to 7m, Markov to 5m, and Eller to 4m, we'll only have 2m left in cap space... This is quite the problem as we'll essentially go into next season with the same average team minus Gionta and Bourray, plus (hopefully) improved Beaulieu and Tinordi.

This leads me to believe that Bergevin has one of two things in mind.
A) He's going to try to move deadweight in Bourque and Desharnais, which would clear nearly 7m, and thus removing 2 of his average to bad players. He could then use that to build a real 3rd line with big bangers who can play defensively and chip in for some clutch goals, or use it to sign a guy like Vanek.

B) He moves Markov for (hopefully) a nice return. If he does this, I'd go for a 1st rounder in 2015 + a good prospect, kind of like the Rivet trade. However I'd much rather he opt for option A, as Markov still has at least another 3 years left and moving him would greatly deteriorate the already slim offensive capabilities of our blue line.

I guess you can consider moving Markov a major trade if it happens. And if the rumors of a longterm Diaz extension are true, option B may happen.

He has preached, patience and build through the draft...that takes time, unfortunately...

I just said it in the OOT thread aswell but Bergevin needs to be active on the trade market with inquiries and trying to steal assets, if he isn't going to do that we could have Helen Keller as our GM and get the same result.

Yes, he should be active, like Holmgren...:shakehead and Slats, GM's like that who have won multiple Cups in the last few years...;)

It's going to happen in about a month once Diaz Markov and Gionta are signed.

Dudley's going to walk into Bergevin''s office admitting he had an Excel cap spreadsheet glitch and there is actually negative 6 dollars left to sign Subban.

Silfverberg+ for Bobby Ryan
- Would've been pissed if I was a Sens fan.

Seguin + Peverley for Eriksson+
- Would've been extremely pissed if I was a Bruins fan.

Pominville for futures
Rebuilding trade, Habs are not there.

Vanek for Moulson + 1st
See above.

Bernier for Frattin & Scrivens
This is not a major move. Like, Eller for Halak was bigger.

Bolland for picks ( ok I'm pushing it, but it's still a great deal for the Leafs)
Habs aren't at the stage to give up picks either.

You missed the point. The guy I was replying to said that major trades don't exist in the NHL. I was just giving examples of what I considered major trades that happened recently in our division.

Bergevin has proven in the past that he is unable to build a winner.

OK fine he helped build the Blackhawks, but aside from that, what has he done?

I kinda realized that.
But I really prefer the GM of my team to make minor, non-stupid moves, rather than major, stupid moves.

And I actually prefer minor, stupid moves to major, stupid moves, which a few of those examples were.

.... Nothing, because he was... actually playing.

But HERE, I admit my sarcasm detector is off.

Essentially what he's been doing is keeping the current lineup extended and giving players rewards due to their hard work, yeah he signed DD, but when he did he was performing quite well.

Gauthier used to jingle with the lineup all the time Campoli, Sopel, etc etc and the players hated that. So I think MB's goal is to make the players appreciate the organization when they give their maximum efforts ( however good or bad that is ).

I'm all for that and everything is fine. I just want to see him accelerate the process with the youth movement. Like selling some veterans for some guys that are almost NHL ready. I prefer sucking for two years than being a middle team who's barely making the playoffs and a fast exit. You've to draft top 10 to get quality youth. I'm fed up to see most than 20M waste of money on veterans like Brière, Gionta, Desharnais, Gorges, Murray, Bouillon, Moen, etc. Time to change the to give the team to Galchenyuk, Subban, Price, Gallagher, Patches and Eller.
