When does the price tag get too expensive on equipment?

Try having a son that plays goal at a high level. Just for safety reasons you need good quality gear. Goal pads - $1600 Goal mask - $800

I do not understand this at all cbc?!. I dont have a kid playing goal, but I did play it myself in the 60's & early 70's & have kept up on equipment developments and price points. You can go on-line & buy top of the line pads for $400-$600; gloves for $200-$400, masks for $200 or less. It must be a "Winnipeg thing" no?. Thats outrageous. Back in the day, a pair of Cooper or Kennesky pads was about $400, blocker & catcher about $300; a custom made molded mask $150-$250. Top-end gear in its day. Additionally, if you were playing at the top tiers in Montreal, Toronto or Winnipeg etc, like the equivalent of todays AAA from Pee Wee on up to the Junior's, as a Goalie, the teams generally provided you with your gear as a "bonus" for signing. Skates & sticks appear to have gone into orbit from a price-point perspective, but the rest of the stuff, seems to me to be on par with about circa 1971. $1600 for pads?. Holy Toledo!.:laugh:

Question to parents (and others): if some Chinese (or other Asian country) factory started pumping out low-cost hockey equip would you buy it for yourself/kids or would you not trust it to do the job?

Assuming that it technically conformed to whatever safety standards exist

A lot of equipment is already made in Mexico for cost purposes (Easton sticks, for example) and I haven't seen any pushback against it. As long as the equipment is capable, this stuff is simply too expensive for most people to be picky.

But I have to say, there's a certain inspiration in glancing down at your stick and seeing "Fabrique au Canada".

It is a Winnipeg thing. It has always been difficult to buy new goal equipment in Winnipeg. Just very few stores selling it and it does depend what you want (brand ). My son has started shopping online ( not to plug anyone but, there are some places in Ontario that custom make all thier stuff and its cheaper ) . The name brand stuff have to pay licensing fees to the NHL, thats why thier stuff cost so much more.
