No point in projecting goalies at this stage. Probably some big misses, hopefully people can point out who I forgot.

I like Olympic hockey better when the NHL doesn't participate.

With NHL players out of the picture, it's a more level playing field. When the NHL goes, the only stories I can find are "Will Canada win gold, like we all expect them to?" and "Is this the best Canadian roster in Olympic history?" and "Could Canada send 3 teams to the Olympics?"

Boooring!

It's way cooler to see a legit rag-tag group of misfits and outcasts. Ben Scrivens backstopping a group headlined by Derek Roy and Andrew Ebbett. Now that's a team that is actually interesting, and has some stories worth following, and has real career implications. And they don't drop the puck as unanimous favourites in every game until the medals are at stake.

Team Canada can actually be proud of a bronze with a zero-NHL roster, instead of disgusted by anything other than gold. It's cool to see Germany getting the Silver, and have teams like Czech Republic make some noise. The NHL players don't need more exposure.

Did you not notice he was replying to a post suggesting a team North America? As in two different countries? You may remember that exact concept was done at the World Cup, where Matthews and McDavid played on the same team, in a tournament that typically works by country.

He made a U23 team North America, buddy.

Two years from now you expect duchene to turn into a better player than Stamkos?

That was a sick team and I'd like to see a similar concept again in the future.

Like hockey porn.

Besides, national teams and international tournaments are boring. Can't really root for any team to win because all of them have non-Blackhawks among them.

Also, why is this in the NHL sub-forum and not in international hockey?

No thanks to a gimmick team.

Its the Olympics. Not some tourny thrown together by the NHL.

I completely agree. What do borders have to do with sports? They're just some lines in the sand that politicians drew.

I'd love to see a legit tournament where teams are made by dividing a pile of sticks at center ice.

Yeah, because the Olympics are so prestigious and noble.

I'd rather an outside entity holds any tournament that involves hockey. Basically any organisation but the IOC. That includes the NHL and NHLPA for sure.

MacKinnon doesn't play LW. Kakko over Mikko is also hilarious.
That top 6 would basically be 1a and 1b, so it's not really a case of Kakko over Mikko. Also, if everything plays out well for Kakko, he might actually be the better player in 2022.

i have to say that the US as the best D in the game now.

Between the D and the goaltending, I tend to think the US would be one of the toughest teams to score on. The offense still isn't as star-studded as Canada's, but I can't recall a time where the US had 2 Cs as good as Eichel and Matthews. Hughes coming up behind them could make for a pretty sick 1-2-3 punch when 2022 gets here.

There's something about that lineup that just makes me uneasy. Maybe the defence and goalies? Too many vets? Not enough jump/grit?

Olmypics is the only true best on best competition in hockey.

The NHL's WCH was not best on best and was also not a real international tournament with 2 made up teams.

I'm not denying the IOC (and IIHF to a lesser extent) are full of crap/themselves, but hockey wise the Olympics is the only place you will have a true best on best tournament unless the NHL's world cup starts to include actual Nations / the Big 6 + two more countries.

The 2018 final was between Germany and the OAR.

The World Cup/Canada Cup has more tradition as a true best-on-best international tournament.

2018 did not have NHL players..... when the Olympics has NHL players, it is by far the only true best on best tournament. Plenty of players value Olympic Gold much more than World Cup Gold.

The Canada Cup does yes to an extent (some countries did not have as developed hockey programs... USA for example was still using a fair amount of NCAA guys, Czechoslovakia was still one country not two).... but 2004 was the last World Cup where it was best on best. 2016 wasn't a true "World Cup" in the sense that not all nations were eligible to play, hopefully next time the NHL guarantees the big 6 a spot and has some sort fo qualifying tournament for the last 2 (or 4) spots.

Also FWIW, the CC was organized by the NHLPA and Hockey Canada, with limited NHL involvement.

This is close to the best lineup that I could imagine for the Czech team. Looks quite alright on paper! Some future improvements on the D and G spots would be nice :)

Voracek - Krejci - Pastrnak
Vrana - Hertl - Frolik
Palat - Chytil - Kase
Kubalik - Faksa - Necas
(Simon)

Kempny - Gudas
Simek - Hronek
Hajek - Polak

Don't forget to include at least 5 players from Europe in favor of NHL players...

Polak is retired so Rutta in his place?

If we're talking 2 years from now (2022 Olympics)... I'd add in Zadina, Kaut, Chlapik, Dostal and maybe Zboril/Masin who may be NHL regulars by then OR return to Europe and establish themselves.

In fairness, if it were today I think our Pro Olympic team could win most World Championships but not a best on best Olympics. Having said that, our C depth is quite good for us, we have a legit Top 4 NHL D (nowhere near the others but legit nonetheless) and 3 goalies who are getting a lot of ice time. It's as good as it's been in awhile.
