It just depends on what version this is. Is it “all time greats that played on the Caps”, then you have your Oates’, Jagr’s, Federov’s, Housley’s, Ranford’s, to consider.

or is it “all time greatest Caps players?” Then guys like Konowalchuk,,Halpern, Pivonka, Ridley, Simon etc get considered.

personally, I think both Oates and Federov are both. Just IMO. Not Jagr. Not Housley. Not Ranford.

I will try to make some actual lines here. That maybe would’ve made sense, plus pick then best Caps playing guys. (and add in a sprinkle of regency bias to boot

Ovechkin - Oates - Christian
Gustafson - Backstrom - Bondra
Ciccarelli - Maruk - Gartner
Ridley - Hunter - Oshie
Federov/Semin

Stevens - Carlson
Langway - Murphy
Gonchar - Iafrate
Hatcher/Green

Kolzig
Holtby

there you have it?

I’m in the under 30 crowd so here’s my team for when I’ve watched the Caps:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Semin-Kuznetsov-Oshie
Laich-Eller-Justin Williams
Chimera-Beagle-Wilson
x: Vrana, Mojo, Fedorov

Alzner-Carlson
Orlov-Niskanen
Orpik-Green
x: Hamrlik, Erskine

Holtby
Varlamov

Kolzig was way past his prime for when I got into watching the Caps and I think Varlamov brought more to the team during his tenure than Neuvirth/Theodore/Johnson/Huet/Halak. Grubauer you could possibly argue for the backup spot.

There was once a time when Olie the Goalie almost single handedly lead a mediocre Caps roster to the SCF, that was one heck of a ride back in 1998. I drove with my GF from DC to Buffalo to watch one of the ECF games there, I think Craig Berube scored the GWG in a 2-0 win over the Dominator, Hasek. And the "Love Fest" at Piney Orchard when they came back after clinching the trip to the SCF, that was my fondest sports memory of all time...

Until "the Fountains" happened :)

I’d take Dino’s playoff line and grit over Semin any day when the games matter. Other than that, I like your lineup.

Goocher would be another question mark for me.

Yeah, Dino was very clearly a superior player to some of the guys I put on my list, but he just wasn't a Capital for very long - 245 total games counting playoffs. It's just not enough time to make a historic Capitals team IMO. Totally subjective though.

JMO but to me it's gotta be more geared towards guys who are thought of and remembered as Capitals, or at least spent a nice chunk of time here.

Rids: Dino and Gartner literally played the same spot. Ridley was a center. I mean if I could move players away from their position I liked Fedorov on defense.

Kolzig. A rare goalie that was also the defacto team captain.

The hard part for me is that Ridley and Kelly Miller were league elite at what they did and Dahlen Halpern Kono were the best line in the league at what they did. They weren't all stars but a 3rd line shutdown group with 3 20 goal scorers

I think it’s simply a different discussion than this one.

if you asked me to build an all time Caps team that was more well rounded/built to win, I’d take Miller over Kono and take Ridley and Dahlen. Wilson might be on that team too.

I know Ridley. Hence the name. He could also play wing easily. And did often.

Gartner didn’t play off wing ask often as Dino did. But they both did. The whole “handedness” thing was so not as big a deal as it is now.

just saying.

Is it different? All time team has to mean 1st thru 12th best scoring forwards all time and so on? Were that the case then perhaps Rod Langway doesn't belong. Mike Ridley was a center, btw
