So the majority of focus this offseason has centered around the RFA's. But what's to become of our pending UFA's, Wheeler and Myers precisely?
So Wheeler is 32 and coming off his best season yet, both in points and team accomplishments. His leadership qualities are exceptional, from what's been reported. July 1 has come and gone and the window to re-sign him is open. At the start of his next contract he will be 33. For most of the NHL 33 is danger zone when it comes to longterm, big money contracts, especially with the salary cap in mind. He's gonna want to get his. So problem No.1; What does a reasonable contract that works for the Jets look like? The Jets almost assuredly are regretting the Little deal already and it's going into the first year. I don't foresee a hometown discount in the offing from the Wheeler camp. So that leaves us to problem No. 2; What do the Jets do once the season starts and our captain is without a contract? Can the Jets afford to have him walk at the end of the year for nothing? What if the Jets are at the top of the standings in February? Certainly you can't trade your captain in this scenario, can you?
The Myers situation is very similar although you're dealing with a much younger player. We all know that this player has his detractors and their concerns are justified. But you still have a valuable asset here that you can't afford to walk with no compensation. Teams around the league are looking for right shot defencemen who can command a power play. I believe he needs to be moved if for no other reason than cap/roster management.
Once Chevy is done checking his kayak zebra mussels he might want to get on this.
