What should the Jets do to counter Nashville's use of the Neutral Zone Trap?

They need to support each other better and move the puck quick and crisp. There was too much spacing and we where slow with our reads and our passing was sloppy last night. Clean that up and we will be able to get through it.

They need to attack the weak side, it's the achilles heel in a trap. D has to pinch hard on the weak side but not before the neutral zone has been cleared. I thought the Jets had a decent number of rims in the 3rd but the D was late supporting or pinching too often. They could also use a few softer dumps.

That was pretty tough last night. They couldn't get through it. They kept trying to carry it in, and you can't carry it though that. It was a good adjustment by Nashville to counter Ehlers consistently gaining the zone with speed. Jets didn't adjust last night, but they will.

My suggestion would be soft dumps into the corners. You can't ring it around because Rinne is good at stopping it back of the net and then it comes right back out. A soft dump cross corner with a fore checker coming with speed should work. I don't think the hard up the boards from our own end deflection in (AKA "the Chiarot") will work because everyone is stationary, need someone coming with speed on the opposite side of the puck to beat their D into the corner, then come in for support.

Roslovic and Perreault will absolutely help this as they're both quick on the fore check and able to get in and cycle.

We're not done, it'll take an adjustment to that strategy, but I believe we can do it.

Don't fall behind in a game

Play like the Lowry line. They were very effective against it. You can't skate around 5 guys. Dump it in and go get it. Eventually if you are hard enough on the D they will cough it up.
Was coming on here to say just that. Score first and hold the lead and it will disappear. After that there already has been a couple good responses to the OP.

That line is absolutely the best at this. No one is pouring into the O zone on a dump in like these guys are. Definitely need way more of that.

You pretty much have "one option" if they are stacking the blue line with defenders--and that's shoot the puck in and chase. Your chances of getting possession will be just as good as theirs, and that's about 50% --which is a lot better than losing possession 80 % of the time by trying to stick handle through all their defenders, in their defensive zone.

Yes, this is the best way to counter that. The first 5 minutes of every game against the Preds may be the most important minutes of the whole game.

This. Get that first goal and Nashville will open it up to try and get the equalizer. At that point the Jets have the option to use the trap themselves or just wait for Nashville to make mistakes. That's all the Predators had to do last night once they got the lead. They played the perfect game in neutralizing the Jets and Rinne played his best of the series so far. I don't think the next game will be as easy for Nashville.

Another thing working in the Jets favor is that the Predators now think they have the series in the bag since they regained home ice advantage. The best situation for the Jets is when they are underestimated. We know they have the talent to win. It's just a matter of playing smarter along with Hellebuyck playing at the top of his game.

Dump the puck into the corners and chase it with speed. Follow through on every single hit on their D. Make them pay for getting to it first. I simply can't understand why the Jets keep dumping the puck along the boards where it is easy pickings for Rinne.

Don't give Subban PP bombs. Stay out the box is #1. Aside from that? Just need our forwards to play a smart and quick game. Scheif kept forcing passes and trying to dangle through the NZ. That's not going to do it.

If we are trailing in the game and they trap, dump into the corner and even give Buff some forecheck time. Conner and others will simply have to be better on the forecheck. Puck has to be in the corner and not behind the net.

There are many other options let’s see what Maurice draws up and what the players can execute.

The Preds are unlikely to bring out the trap without being in the lead. So the best thing the Jets can do to counter the Lavy Trap is to score first and get up early. This series will be crucial in scoring first. Lavy has learned after being up by 3 and losing by 3 that he needs to trap us to contain our offence when he has a lead.

Dump ins are really the worst thing you can do against a trap team with a mobile defence and active goalie like the Preds. As was demonstrated last night. This is how the old Devils did it. You will not beat mobile D and an active goalie this way consistently no matter what kind of speed your forward core has.

Best way to beat it is to have your D skate right into the neutral zone with a forward just ahead on one side and a forward behind on the other. It forces the opposition to either press on the D man to one side and force a trap to that side but that is where you can have your trailer busting up the other side to pass back to which makes the other team scramble to get back to the other side. It's actually something my team learned in online NHL play when the opposition tries a neutral zone hard press 1-4 (1-2-2) blueline trap like the Preds did last game. Either you you force the other team to pick a side to press to and the trailer likely gets through. If they cheat to the trailer you now have numbers on the other side.

The problem with that is "score first" isn't really a strategy.

My life plan:
1. Get rich
2. Use money to start successful business

We are great at opening the scoring this year and had many chances just didn't have luck on our side. Either way dump and chase is destined to fail against a team with mobile defenders and an active goalie. Especially in their barn where the goalie and D know the bounces better. We seemed to figure it out a bit more towards the end with the trailing forward we just weren't executing anything at that point right.
