Hello there Guys;
We already know the Obvious Chariot 50% retained salary Gorton plans to make as this is an expiring contract.

Who else might we target for second contract retention?

Which contract offers more short term gain without hurting Long term rebuild Plan

Byron at 50% with an extra year would be enticing for some teams.

There are so many candidates, so hard to choose.

1. Price - when he gets healthy, what an attraction for a contender. The best goalie in the world at an AAV of 5.25M. A contender will pay through the nose next year.

2. Petry - should still get us a great return at 3.25M AAV

3. Lehkonen - if needed to get that 1st or good prospect and fit him under the acquiring team's cap.

4. Hoffman - 2.25M for a guy that will get you 20+ goals the next two seasons plus help a post season run.

5. Edmundson - retain 50% and package him with Petry if a contending team is serious about trying to win and ready to pay through the nose in futures to do so.

6. Drouin - self explanatory

7. Byron - self explanatory

8. Dvorak - once he gets some games in under MSL and gets his value back up.

A lot of potential to trade a lot of vets for a lot of futures.

The Price, Petry, Hoffman, Edmundson and Dvorak one have no chance of happening. The habs are not going to retain on players with multiple years left, and even if they did it would be a small retention, not 50%.

I think you are limited to 3 retained salary transactions on your books at any time. Expiring contracts like Chiarot/ Kulak are no issue as they are gone next year. Have to be careful on long-term ones as they limit your ability to retain in the future next deadline etc. or if you want to retain on a Petry in offseason. someone like Dvorak puts one on your books for 3 more years through 24-25 effectively making your limit 2 until 25-26

I would only want to retain on one LT contract now as it will limit future moves.

We're not winning anything over the next few years. I would. As for Price, it's a lot to swallow, but the package of futures he should command make it well worth it imo.

I'd definitely take 5M in dead weight on the cap for 4 years in exchange for another Suzuki level prospect.

Well done! There is no way we are retaining past one more season or pending UFA's. Only ones we will have to retain is Gallagher and Price and that's very tricky to find a trade partner. That requires some serious consideration and depends on what is coming back.

I'd even hesitate to retain on Hoffman if someone called about him this deadline. If we are retaining to help their cap past this season, pay up or shut up!
