What does Vegas do differently than us?

They are hard working. They play in the neutral zone better than most. They recover pucks or battle for pucks better than most. Their goaltender is a big game player.

Toronto needs to gut half of the team to be as good as Vegas. Skill obviously isn't everything.

What else?

Top third in the league in shots against rather than bottom feeders. Couple this with great goaltending (even with injuries) and you have a big part of the answer there IMO.

Miscasts playing with a vengeance trying to prove something. They acquired a ton of players who overachieved in secondary roles who are were ready for extra opportunity and can now roll four 2nd lines. Betting on Fleury was the best move McPhee could have made and its looking like a steal today. Still can't believe they're as good as they are.

I mean, we did that too and we went nowhere. The entire Kessel era core were castoffs from other teams.

1) redhot goaltending

2) dumb opposition GMs basically handing them prime assets on a silver platter

Not much that’s replicateable. There is going to be a lot of over analysis about their success.

Played with confidence, had much better coaching that emphasized playing to the group's strength, significantly better goaltending. All 30 teams should be embarassed. This just proves how vastly overpaid most of the 'hockey minds' across the league are.

The team plays with a chip on it's shoulder because the majority of them were not happy to be left available to the expansion draft.

They have tons of speed and never seem to give up on a play.
Add that to a goalie who is the best in the post season this year and you have success.

If Andersen played like Fleury it might be us facing WAS right now. :sarcasm:

Vegas is an outlier. A very special outlier.

I wouldn't wonder or worry about what they did as something replicative. Because in order to repeat the process, all manner of elements have to be ideally placed and then maximized and none of those conditions will ever fall to Toronto and likely, never fall to another expansion team. If anything , GMs will have learned from this experience, who and what not to protect and who and what to protect.

Full marks to McPhee.

I'm on the Golden Knights train for the duration of their ride, that's for sure.

Here's hoping the Capitals come back. The drama between McPhee's former and present clubs just seems too good not to fall into Fate's good hands.

They outwork every team in the league, force turnovers like crazy, and really capitalize on them in transition. They do these things a lot better than us, but they do these things better than everyone.

Crazy to think they were forced to use 5 different goalies this season.

Played with absolutely zero pressure. Nothing was expected. Even when they stayed near the top of the league and on into the playoffs. If they suddenly lost 4 in a row everyone would simply figure it was bound to happen and that would be that.

Couldnt agree more! Said the same thing, those are the 2 differences why they are still playing and we are not imo.
Yeah those are my two biggest criticisms for the leafs by a long shot. I know some people don't like it, but look at what a weaker roster than ours can do because they have those two things. The leafs need better coaching and better goaltending, and they can be just as successful as Vegas

What a dumb thread.

First year of the team and they got to pick players from every team. First chance at ufas, got to wheel and deal with everyone too.

They're doing something no exansion team in pro sports (if i'm not mistaken) have done. This team was not expected to make the playoffs let alone the NHL Finals. VGK have the potential to do more in 1 year than this whole franchise has done in 50+.
