What does it take to be a fan?
What responsibilities does a fan have?
How should a fan conduct themselves?
Is filling a building every night enough?

These are the questions I’ve been asking myself this season. I’m disappointed as the next guy but do we think it’s fun to work as a professional athlete or hockey ops in this city? It should be more positive, we have 97 and a brand new arena. Enjoy it. We have the best player and building on earth.

Does having season tickets, a twitter account, a jersey or a handful of tickets give you permission to be abusive on social media? Does playing junior B make you a potential GM candidate?

I can guarantee you this city is not fun to play in anymore. It’s toxic. We have the quietest building in the league. We chirp our players in public and social media.

Our general manager, coaches, some players and families avoid going into public places in this city.

I’m not blaming the lack of success on the fan base. But we are a factor. Players legitimately leave us off their list, and it has nothing to do with weather.

Most of you have made watching the oilers less fun.

The team and the GM made their bed. Stop trying to "blame the fans", the fans have virtually zero blame for any of this. The fans are not the reason the team is horrid to watch, the GM who built the team is the reason.

You're not wrong, but let's be honest here. The Oilers have made the Oilers less fun to watch.

maybe it's you who should disconnect from social media until the oilers finally put together an adequate team.

Lowe, Tambo, MacT, Howson, Chiarelli, and Katz contributed more to the current situation than the fans.

Edmonton will always be a fishbowl market, but what can be done about it? It's hard for even the most positive person to remain content with the situation. Edmonton just wants a team that shows up everynight and battles. The late 90s Oilers were beloved for being slightly above average. The Oilers have been atrociously bad, and the management has been smug about it most of the time. It hurts to be a fan of this team.

The ineptitude of this organization has made watching the Oilers less fun.

That's all there is to it.

negative energy results in negative results. The power of belief is stronger than you think.

    Negative fans generate negative results.

If you let the fans vote I'm pretty sure Barzal is selected and that Larsson trade never happens.

It's a city that is hungry as any for a good hockey team, and they've had one good hockey team in the last 12 years. Yes, it is a terrible place to be at the moment if you work or play for the Oilers, but I'm not going to blame the fans for that. It's one of the worst runs any franchise has had in North American professional sports.

Edit: That said, heckling a professional athlete outside of the arena is embarrassing. But like, it's going to happen. So what can you do?

one point i agree with is the public chirping. i hope Mcd or any other oiler does not have that happen again thats crap . if the player sucks fine the whole hockey world will soon figure it out and that palyer will be gone out of the nhl at some point. other than that i pay to watch at the rink when i can come to edmonton . I pay at home to watch by buying sports net, so if i think the team is playing like crap i dont have a problem telling people that. as for management i feel free to chirp them as they can control there skill level

Over the last 12 seasons, the Oilers have the fewest combined points of any NHL team (not including Vegas). Except for Buffalo and Arizona/Phoenix the Oil have 100 less points than every other team. It's absurd how long they have been bad for.

That's not the fault of the fans.

Gregor wrote a nice article summing up how bad the Oil have been.

    A Must Win? Sadly, Yes.

I don't agree with publicly chirping the players, but its sort of brought on by the Management. When no one is held accountable the fans will lash out where they can.

I’ll be positive about the Oilers when they deserve it.

I was optimistic even through the Hall trade but the direction leaves a lot to be desired and the results speak for themselves.

Maybe I am super negative about the Oilers but 11 out of 12 years with no playoffs and this year looking like last year... do you not feel the same?

Having a different opinion doesn’t make you any less or more of a fan, we all want the same thing: for the Oilers to be good.

It takes making the team aware of your frustration and their failings that they are unaware of.

Though I agree we aren't helping with our antics and negative energy, the greater blame lies on the management team that has generated just 2 points more than the worst NHL record overall since the last round of expansion (2000-2001).

Not only that the only non-1990s expansion team with a worse record since the Oilers last Stanley Cup is the Islanders, but that's only by 15 points over more than 2000 games. 3 of those excluded expansion teams have earned more points over that time frame than the Oilers in less games.

We shouldn't be heckling players, but it's understandable why we're fed up. For years, the organization blamed economics, but it's actually got worse since that excuse was removed.

Throwing anything on the ice is stupid. If fans want to send a message, do it with your wallets. It’s the only thing Daryl cares about.
