I think it's gonna go like this:

Draisaitl - Mcdavid - Kassian
Benson - Nuge - Neal
Nygard - Sheahan - Gagner
Khaira - Haas - Archibald
Granlund

Nurse - Larsson
Klefbom - Bear/Jones
Russel - Benning
Lagesson

Dark horse Marody that could take a spot on the 2nd or 3rd line. I think with Russel being confirmed as moved to the left side Bear could definitely make the team over Jones. He could immediately be our best offensive dman if he comes into camp and shows and he can handle 17-18 minutes a night being babysitted by Klefbom as a d partner.

Edit: I forgot about Chiasson, he's gonna be in there somewhere.

I think everyone is forgetting that Boxcar poster is a family member, close friend or just a big fan of Brandon Manning.

Take what they say with a grain of salt.

I don't hate the idea of Manning as a 7, but I think his contract will make the team think otherwise unless he has an unbelieveable camp and preseason.

Your results may vary but Manning will need an influx of injuries to get near a NHL roster

There are way too many wildcards at the moment to give this a real shot.

From what's been said in the media it's looking like the first line will be Draisaitl-Mcdavid-Neal. Looks like RNH is going to have to carry the 2nd line by himself again.

Benson-RNH-Chaisson
Nygard-Sheahan-Archibald
Khaira-Haas-Kassian
Gagner, Granlund

Yeah Chiasson is at worst 3rd line RW. I think Gags and Juj are in tough to make the team this year. Our PK has been through 2 coaches now and still sucks so that’s a personnel problem. Guys like Archibald, Sheahan, Grandlund are accomplished PKers in the NHL and Haas is a big PK guy in Europe. We need an overhaul on our PK personnel which will come from those bottom 6ers so I’m really not sure where a guy like Gagner can find a role on this team. Khaira is kind of at a career crossroads. He can’t afford to take a step back or stay stagnant but if it’s down to him or Grandlund I’m taking Grandlund every time because he’s going to score more and again PK better.

Going by Gulutzan's comments, it seems safe to call Gagner and Khaira wingers.

What I think happens from this...

Draisaitl-McDavid-Kassian
Neal-RNH-Gagner
Khaira-Haas-Chiasson
Granlund-Sheahan-Archibald

In my eyes, Sheahan/Archibald looks like a budget verison of Sutter/Hansen, whom Granlund had success with in Vancouver. This also gives you a pretty stable checking line.

Haas with Khaira and Chiasson balences out eachother's weaknesses. Haas brings speed, while Khaira/Chiasson give you the size to cycle, Khaira and Haas can also each take draws on their strong side. Plus this is another line you can toss out in a defensive situations and not worry too much.

Of this group, I think Granlund, and Gagner have the weakest grip on their spots, as I can see Nygård and Yamamoto both nipping at their heels. Haas would also be in this conversation, but outside of Marody, he doesn't have much compensation at centre. And even Marody is just as likely to to be a winger.

Has Jones spent most of his time playing RD in Bakersfield? Curious why I keep seeing him listed on RD depth charts.

I do however think both Marody and Jones play significant time this year

How training camp starts comes from idea and paper theory, where training camp ends depends on performance and how willing the coaching staff is to shake things up if they aren't gelling at this level. I can't see any real solid idea of October 2nd lines because this is the most unpredictable line-up I've seen. Too many players who play multiple positions and too many battles for positioning.

If I had to make an educated guess based on where they start off and how I think camp performances could go, it would be something like this:

Draisaitl - McDavid - Kassian
(we pretty much know this trio will get an opportunity to continue).
Neal - RNH - Chiasson
(Think the Oilers may do something before Oct.2 that shakes this up but it's the most sensible combination today).
Granlund - Sheahan - Archibald
(I like this trio as being capable of 30 combined goals, some grit and net presence and to PK).
Khaira - Haas - Gagner
(Samwise in his CBJ role: 4th line ES, PP specialist. Haas is competing with Colby Cave for this spot but has wheels and shoots right, so I give him the edge on paper. Khaira will score more than his 3 last year, even from the 4th line).
Cave, Jurco
Cave did everything that was asked but doesn't score. Him and Haas is the most open battle I see in camp. With Brodziak down, this is a two horse race IMO. Jurco is an interesting figure. Nygard can go down without waivers, so I have Jurco here, but I won't be surprised to see either/one of these in the Ty Rattie spot on the top-line at some point. Until then 4th line spot ins after bad Gagner/Khaira games might be the early spot.

Nurse-Larsson
(expect 21-22 minutes a night. Hard match-ups and PK. Probably some PP for Nurse. Don't think the first pair/second pair/third pair thing will be as important this year while this group is healthy. Think 4 of the 6 will be within the 20-22 minute range from all three pairing and it's just about how they're being used).
Klefbom-Bouchard
(I give Bouchard the edge here simply because I think he can outplay and outproduce others in preseason and if he does, he is what is needed. I expect 22 minutes for Klefbom, 19.5 or so for Bouchard with cherry linemates and zone starts).
Russell-Benning
(20 minutes for Russell, 17 or so for Benning based on PK usage and whatforth. Probably matched up where possible against third or fourth lines. Little to no time with 97 or 93 where possible).
Persson
Wild card. Stauffer hinting that Benning may be in the pressbox is interesting. Persson is more of a style fit than Benning for this group. Will be one to watch in camp

Obviously this gets thrown around for lots of reasons. Injuries? Strong camps from someone on the outside or weak camps from someone in the inside? This line-up is so weird you could put half of the players into different positions.

I doubt Cave makes the opening roster... Nygard will be there imo. They'll want to give him a look at the NHL level to see if his speed translates well to the next level.

I also don't think Bouchard makes the opening roster. I think they want him in the AHL getting big minutes for at least a partial AHL season... no reason to rush him onto the NHL roster.

Persson will almost certainly make the roster as with Nygard... they'll want to see if his game translates to the NHL level after doing so well in Sweden.

I think it's a 3 way battle between Jones/Lagesson/Bear for the last dman spot on the opening roster.

I'd probably give the slight edge to Jones BUT I think Lagesson is a true dark horse because his defensive game and physicality will be something that the team needs as well.

Tomas Jurco is going to surprise, my dark horse pick
Expecting Nygard, Haas, Benson and Persson to make opening night roster. Cuts may include Cave, Gagner, and Benning
McDavid specifically named both Nygard and Persson in his interview, stating they looked good. His word is sacred

the prospects on d is the most interesting part of this seasons training camp. i really want to see what lagesson and persson can handle. i would like to see russell get challenged, his slot on the team is way to easy to hold imo. i actually prefered benning over russell at the end of last season

Interesting that RNH said on the 31 thoughts pod he wants consistency in the lines. Feels like he's never been able to build chemistry with line mates. Mentioned that he enjoyed playing on a line with Khaira and Puljujarvi and wanted to stay on a line with them longer.

Really good interview.

One word: Kailer Yamamoto. Now that his wrist is healed up I’m really looking forward to him making the lineup and showing what he can do.

With his speed and skill I see him slotting in great on Connors wing. A healthy Kailer could get 20-30 goals.
