What average % of players from an NHL draft ever play a game in the NHL?

Each year a couple hundred of players get picked in the NHL draft but many of them don't ever play especially the really lower round draft picks who sometimes turn into world class players like Datsyuk and Zetterberg but my question is how many players percentage wise actually ever play a game in the NHL after they been drafted.

On average, probably anywhere from 40% to 50%. Hockeydb shows the percentage of players who end up playing in the NHL for every draft. You can probably do the math and found out the rough estimates.

Wow that's a lot higher than I would have expected. My guess was around 15-20% of players. But I guess I am thinking of players who have a typical career in the NHL rather than playing just a single game at least.

Yeah the outliers definitely affect the numbers. On average, 15% to 20% is probably the number of players who actually do make an impact at the NHL level.

Your thread title should be edited to reflect that change from your original premise.

This.

There is a massive difference between playing a single game in the NHL and actually becoming an NHL player. The percentage of the latter being quite small outside of the first round.

Article from tsn on players from 2000-09 drafts who played 50 or more NHL games. Basically 1st round 80%. 2nd round 44%. 3rd round 30% 4th through 7th under 20 %. http://www.tsn.ca/playing-the-percentages-in-the-nhl-draft-1.206144

This guy has a little more stringent rules and goes for two full seasons or 164 games

The saying is that if you get 2 players per draft, your day at the table was successful. That's 60 guys. If you go 60 deep in games played in any given draft, you'll hit the low end of productive players. In 2003, one of the all time drafts, the 60th player in GP is Zack Stortini.

So 60 out of 210 picks is about 28.5%. 62 out of 217 is the same %. The % of players that end up playing 3+ seasons is going to be less than that, etc, etc. That seems like a fair midpoint.
