I think that comes from a Spanish-speaking group doing mainstream rap. They ran into that problem originally too with their labels wanting them to be a latin hip-hop group (which has an audience it's just pretty) niche and they didn't want to do that.

You can not like them, but I don't think you can call them a gimmick or a novelty act. They were always pretty authentic and they outlasted most hip hop artists and groups from their era.

That’s certainly fair and probably not fair on my part. I only listened to their first album anyway.

Duesseldorf
Dimmu Borgir - Stormblast
Tocotronic - ...es it egal, aber
Tocotronic - Digital ist besser
Bad Religion - Against the grain
New Model Army - Impurity
Crowbar Time heals nothing
Bad Religion - Recipe for hate
Amorphis - Tales from the thousand lakes
Fields of the Nephilim - Elizium
Blind Guardian - Tales from the twilight world

it's quite hard to pick only ten albums from this decade. And I haven't even touched grunge yet.

^ That first Tocotronic album was boring lo-fi amateur hour. Good mention of New Model Army though, much better than all these shit American alternative bands that couldn't sing.

With Tocotronic it's the lyrics that hold it together. To me, it's poetry of the mundane and it mixes so well with the music.
New Model Army was probably my favourite band at that time. And again, the lyrics really deliver.

I couldn't find ten rock albums from the 1990s that I listen to in their entirety on a regular basis (if we're limiting it to one per artist). Here's what I have so far:

Dave Matthews Band - Crash
Iron Maiden - The X Factor
Matthew Good Band - Beautiful Midnight
Rage Against the Machine - self titled
Weezer - blue album

There are lots of albums where I like quite a bit of the material, but I haven't listened to them in their entirety in years. The next five might be Tragically Hip - Phantom Power, Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory, Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss, Nirvana - Nevermind, and Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction.

I used to a listen to a lot of rap but haven't done so in many years. A few selections would include ATCQ - The Low End Theory, OutKast - Aquemini, The Roots - Do You Want More?!!!??!, Blackalicious - A2G, The Coup - Steal This Album, and Common - One Day It'll All Make Sense.

Dude Ranch to me is a really under-appreciated album. The production isn't great, and it would have been better with Travis Barker, but lyrically it is my favourite Blink album. Mark's song writing peaked during that era IMO (Waggy, Apple Shampoo, Lemmings, etc.).

8. Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic - The Sundays

f*** that was a good album that grew over time, their third one was even more consistent but didn't have the same quality of singles, I'd say they're both better than the Mazzy Star album listed before.

Very nice sound that band had, not quite Britpop, not quite jangle or dream pop, I've tried to find similar stuff but it's never as good. There was one 90s Kiwi band called The Magick Heads, female singer with a slightly similar voice too but nowhere near the same quality.

Most annoying thing about The Sundays though, is that after three albums, they just called it quits with no side projects or solo or anything, Harriet Wheeler hasn't sung in a release since '97.

It was the perfect album for a high school kid back then. Like you said the lyrics were top notch, didn't mind the production being poor, it was still 100 times better than Cheshire cat. Starting the album with Pathetic was just the perfect touch too, possibly my favorite song of there's.

The rest of my top ten albums have been posted numerous times EXCEPT

Everclear - Sparkle and Fade

Yeah, Everclear was good. I'm surprised So Much for the Afterglow hasn't been mentioned (unless I overlooked a post).
Helmet also had some good albums in the 9os; I don't think they've been referenced yet.

A conspicuous absence: Limp Bizkit. I hated 'em, but they sold a lot of albums. And I have a feeling some of u guys still have red Yankees caps languishing in your closets.

+1 for Concrete Blonde. Always loved Johnette's voice. Can't believe I forgot about them when making my list.

I will say, her cover of The Carpenters' "Hurting Each Other" with Wall of Voodoo's Marc Moreland is amazing, while in many ways remaining true to The Carpenters' version of the song. It's on probably the greatest tribute album ever made, If I Were A Carpenter, from 1994. Only weak track on that album was Shonen Knife's cover of Top of the World...don't cover a song if you can't pronounce a letter in its title, it won't sound good.
