He came back out after receiving the hit, if only for a shift or two. Tells me it may not be *that* bad, but who knows with concussions anymore.

If we're looking at a multi-month injury here, that might be all she wrote for this season. We flat-out don't have the depth to deal with these kinds of injuries.

Semin, Skinner, Ward and Pitkanen before Thanksgiving. Staal's knee if you want to count that. Disgusting.

I was kind surprised that he came back and played in that game. That made it confusing when it was speculated that he was concussed again. What are the odds they let a guy back on the ice after failing the "name this town" test? I guess the symptoms showed up later?

Either way, doesn't matter. He won't be back before Christmas...and by that time I suspect the Canes will be nearly mathematically eliminated. We'll be talking 5-12 draft picks.

On Semin or Skinner? We have the news on Semin, and it's awful. How about Skins?

Was talking about Skinner. Generally Muller updates after morning practices. He's going to evaluate how Skinner responds to the practices today and tomorrow before deciding Thursday's status.

On Semin and his return, concussions can be tricky and not all are made equally, and not all players react the same way to them. Semin may have passed every test in the room, but felt wobbly after taking a shift. No fault for anyone for giving him a spin if all signs pointed to OK, but glad they didn't keep him out there.

yeah it's hard to say how *bad* "this concussion" is but the second one in a short period of time has to be concerning for his heath and career. same with Skinner or any other player. really, really unfortunate for these young guys. no one understands the cumulative effects I don't think and what they can do further to address the issue is ongoing one would think. really, really too bad......

I think what this hit really drives home is that without taking all open ice hits out of the game you can't avoid concussions. There wasn't anything even debatable about that hit, no headshot, didn't leave his feet, didn't appear to hit his head on the ice, and it's still a concussion.

This is the concussion that has to stay in the game. That would be similar to saying "without taking shotblocking out of the league, we can't avoid broken legs" or "without taking goalies out of the game we can't avoid pulled groins."

The league's done an excellent job of cutting down on them, but this is one means of getting them that must necessarily stay.

Yep. In the end, it's a tough game for tough guys. Not like football, but still.

Bummer for the Canes and Semin. Would really suck if he couldn't represent Mother Russia in Sochi.

I agree with you. I just wouldn't be at all shocked if in 20 years that hit is a thing of the past. I hope it isn't, but unlike the pulled groins and broken legs you referenced, concussions can severely impact quality and length of life.

The only possible caveat to these types of concussions would be stricter (or actual) steroid testing.

Game gets artificially big and fast, and the violence of the collisions escalates with the size and speed of the players.

When looking at the size of the Players vs the NFL, I don't see the hgh connection.

Different sports. Steroids get tailored to the needs of the athlete. I'd guess 'football culture' would be a little more reckless in what they are injecting into their bodies, too.

We dont have the depth to deal with these?

No team in the league has the depth to deal with injuries to 2 of their best 4 forwards, both goalies, their #1 defenseman, and a handful of the 3rd line + some.

This season is DONE. By the time the injuries from the first 20 games are healed, the season will be mathematically gone.

This team is cursed beyond belief.

So sick of this ****

Really? You think NHL players of today look similar to NHL players of 30 years ago?

I know many of them now have to take their diets and fitness serious, as this was not an issue at all in the 80s and beyond. But the NHLs drug testing system is a joke.
