Try to do this every year (I thought I posted a thread last year but can't find it).

We are less than one week away- let's predict the Western Conference- Central and Pacific

Just looking at it, I still think the Central division is pretty strong, but I have to say I think overall the Western conference is a little down right now. I think we have 2, possibly 3 elite teams in Winnipeg, Nashville and (maybe) San Jose. But after that a few good but not great teams and a whole lot of question marks. (And yep, I probably didn't learn my lesson with Vegas last year but I still say they are due for major regression).

    My picks:

    Central:
    1- Winnipeg
    2- Nashville
    3- St Louis
    4- Dallas
    5- Minnesota
    6- Colorado
    7- Chicago

    Pacific:
    1- San Jose
    2- Calgary
    3- Vegas
    4- Edmonton
    5- LA
    6- Anaheim
    7- Arizona
    8- Vancouver

Generally speaking the West is mostly about goaltending and who has a good season, who gets hurt, and who is just bad.

It's because I refuse to recognize the Kings baby sisters as a hockey team :)

Is everyone just doing negative mojo or do you all really believe Winnipeg is better than the Preds? I dont do predictions but I do think we are the best team in the Central and the West provided we can stay reasonably healthy

I really think Winnipeg is better. Much deeper up front than we are. Their weakness is goal, they could ride Hellybuck into the ground if they aren't careful.

i don't think goal would be their weakness. he was a vezina finalist. im not sure they have too much of a weakness. i think they are a 6-8 points better team than us this year. especially missing watson for a 1/3 of the season. i remember getting 5-6 points off of watson's big nights alone last year. especially his short handed goals, really buries an opposing team.

Goaltending over the course of 82 games could be their weakness unless they plan on giving Helle about 75 starts.

Brossoit is nowhere near as a good as Saros.

(And I know everyone has a bad night sometimes but Hellebuyck got shelled tonight by Dallas)

Screw listing out every team. The Preds are doing it this year. The crazies will be lamenting how this is a wasted season, woe is me, window is firmly closed, etc. as we slide into the playoffs with a mid-seed.

Then the boys are going to kick in an extra gear like 2016-2017 but this time they're bringing home the Cup.

Go ahead and envision partying on Broadway alongside the pedal tavern bachelorette parties. That is in your future.

I think the different between us and the Jets can be summarized as follows

    Laine > Forsberg
    Scheifele > Johanson
    Wheeler > Arvidsson

That's basically it. I think we are evenly matched at every other position.

I'm almost sort of hoping we get the 7th seed and play the Pacific division winner instead of facing the Jets in either the first or second round.

You think their top 4 D and goaltending(starter and backup) are simply even?

    Sorry, gotta disagree. Our D> their D. Our G > Their G.

Hellebuyck may end up being solid and a perennial Vezina contender but as of right now hes had one good year and hes got a backup who is marginal NHL talent. We have a Vezina winner(and three time nomimee) and his backup is a player who could start on several NHL teams. Over 82 games that looks like advantage us.

I think team wise they are better, but the goalie issue may bite them more in the butt come playoff time than it does in the regular season. Riding a guy that much will leave him dead once that time comes. We will see how it goes.

Probably a controversial opinion but I'd take Forsberg over Laine every day. Laine is either the 1st or 2nd best pure goal scorer in the world. Forsberg is a better overall offensive talent. Forsberg is a much better overall player.

I think it's useless to compare teams by looking them at the paper. All it matters, is to get into the playoffs and everything can happen. We were the 16th seed and went to the Finals. There's so many other factors that come into play in the postseason, and luck has a big part in the play in the end. Depth in your lineup being a huge part of it. The teams who have won Cups these part years have the same thing in common: players like Guentzel, Smith-Pelly, Teräväinen. We had Sissons in that Run.

On paper, the Jets look better than us and probably the Blues as well, minus goaltending. But I think we just have to get into the playoffs and anything can happen. The odds were stacked against us in -17 and we beat them.

Our 2c is also much better than the Jets; it was such a blessing when Stastny chose Vegas over Winnipeg, since neither Little nor Roslovic is a truly capable 2C right now.

The other good thing about our position versus the Jets is that after this season, they need to pay Laine, Connor, Myers, and Trouba, and Wheeler's extension kicks in next year. Their depth took a hit after this past season (see retirement of Enstrom, Armia/Mason to Montreal) and that is going to happen again. Trouba is almost certainly gone.
