Having been beat by the Oilers yesterday, and how they seem to really be on the right path.... at least this year. I looked back to when the oilers last thought they had a contender. They had really good draft picks, talented and all but some reason wrong mix never got anywhere and they had to blow it up.

I love our guys, of course I do, but is this no matter how talented are top enders are, the right mix? If we do blow it this year (which I think we have...) is their a McDavid like player that can save us from our 7 year most likely 8th to 9th year of hell? This is a lot to take in but the similarities are huge. Read the very last few lines highlighted in red about the oilers below. Thanks everyone.

Now to the meat, this was a post from a reddit user from a year ago about why the oilers failed those years. Reading it now gives me goosebumps about the team this year. I will provide link only to show where the info comes from :

If you missed it above , red lines :

That feeling, that emotion, happened April 18th 2015. My office exploded a typical dull office day was filled with cheers and applaud cars outside were honking on Jasper Ave. It was not full blown win during a cup run game but it was something to cheer for. To this day I ask people if they remember where they were when they heard McDavid was an Oiler and lighting struck twice, everyone remembers every detail.

This was the moment, I fully believe that ownership realized that changes at the top had to happen and April 24th 2015 Peter Chiarelli became GM and President of Hockey Operations. Removing Kevin Lowe and Craig MacTavish from team management duties. Not even a week after winning the lottery.
This was officially the beginning of a new chapter in Oilers history. The McDavid effect was in full affect.

Closing.

I want to close in saying some people may look at us as lesser fans for celebrating a decade of hockey that had the lowest of lows at times. To those I say you cannot truly appreciate the highs without respecting the lows. This very well may go down as one of the darkest decades in Oilers history but every team in every sport has a turning point and I believe we will look back in 10 years from now and point directly to this season as the catalyst to many great runs.

I've always feared the Canucks may have a Colorado like season where they have one good year, double down and absolutely suck. Moral of that story? Taking a step back, trade away a player getting out of their prime (Duchene) and smartly reload the franchise with a good pick in the draft and build up the depth with smart moves.

With how the team is set up right now, that could be done in 2 years with tons of dead weight gone and young players with new contracts. This also means you need to consider a Horvat/Miller trade for a big return before they decline as assets.

That should be the model, that's why MacFarland should be a top choice for the GM job if Benning is finally gone.

Becoming the Oilers is the biggest fear but if the Canucks stink and get a top d-man prospect this year, it could really help them in that 2 year window I mentioned (Podkolzin and Hoglander would also still be on ELCs)

When Peter Chiarelli is hired as the Canucks new President of Hockey Operations, then you can cue in the Rod Serling music and narrative. "Consider the bizarre case of the 2013-14 Edmonton Oilers (er.. Vancouver Canucks).

Frankly I'd rather be then because almost no matter the team circumstance, there is a certain level of starry eyed hope to having the best player on the league on your team (anchored by the #2 or #3, no less) signed to long term contracts. EP and QH, excellent picks for their positions as they are, do not inspire the same level of confidence and enthusiasm.
