Franchise valuations brought to you by the accountants at Enron lmao. Every team getting a double digit 1-year increase of 20-40%? Meanwhile, I turn on the actual games and we're playing in front of thin crowds on the road. It doesn't really matter whether people blame the economy or fans losing interest, if teams aren't filling the barn when the Leafs come to town it's much worse when other teams roll through. I read about how new TV deals are uncertain and that Rogers/Bell are losing a ton of money on their current deal.

The sale of the Senators included 70 acres of land around the arena, and exclusive rights to negotiate for 7.5 acres at Lebreton flats, which is prime real estate right by the River. If you've ever come to Ottawa and visited the War Museum, it's right there.

Much of this value is probably related to the free money that's expansion fees, but that's not in any way sustainable and if the league has any semblance of self preservation, it won't expand again for a long while. The league has been propping up a failing franchise in Arizona for a decade and once teams start folding or relocating again, the billionaires are going to realize that an NHL team isn't actually free money like it says on the tin. The reason they'll pay those outrageous fees is because their franchise value keeps going up (a $650m fee in Seattle into $1.12b is a pretty nice piece of work), but they'll stop paying once valuations come back down to earth.

The Leafs are probably worth 2.5b. Habs and Rangers are worth their valuations, and a few other popular teams are going to be worth their price tags. But if they think the Ducks and the Jets are worth a billion dollars each, they're only fooling themselves. In Premier League Soccer, middle-of-the-pack teams are worth about 10% of their ultra-popular cousins. While parity may exist in the NHL's standings, it does not belong in its balance sheets.

I have a couple of running jokes with some mates. I tell them the only way we’ll stay in North AL and not and summer in Maine is if Elon moves some of his Space X to Huntsville and helps the college ( UAH) Chargers hockey team moves up to D1, and he buys the Leafs and moves the Growlers to Huntsville.

2.65 billion valuation is crazy high but guess it makes sense as the leafs are the largest market in the NHL and top 2 or 3 in terms of profitability

NBA has teams at 8B+ valuation (warriors i think are there). So about ~3X the most valuable team in the NHL.

Tannenbaum sold 5% of MLSE for $400M, which values the entire company at 8B.

The Leafs accounting for 2.65B of that seems reasonable.

If you're still financially supporting this team you're part of the problem.

No wonder Tanenbaum remains so "fantastically supportive". This organization continues to make piles of money. Regardless of whether they actually win anything.

Tanenbaum has made it crystal clear he measures franchise success in terms of value creation.

It's safe to say the "greatest fan base in the world" is doomed to remain under the same corporate ownership disinterest that has resulted in the richest hockey franchise on the planet being managed like an investment product rather than the sports team it actually is.

That won't change any time soon. Not until ML$E takes a kick in the coin purse. If the fans want a contending hockey team they can be proud of they need to show ownership they'll no longer support incompetent management.

Just because you're part of the problem doesn't mean you can't be part of the solution.

I've never understood the boycott them financially and they will become competent theory. In my mind there is no correlation between profit margin and hockey competence, except for in the minds of some Leaf fans.

The objective in doing so is to evoke change.

Whether the incoming management team would be more competent is impossible to say. What's obvious is that with only one playoffs series win in nine years the Shanahan administration has failed. Withholding financial support for an organization that only appears to answer to the bottom line is the best thing fans can do.

Maybe consider donating the money you would spend on a game to a local little league team instead.

Even if they don't win they'll appreciate it.

Has profit ever been the deciding factor for change for any NHL team ever? Presidents/GM/Coaches get fired when the team performs poorly.

I agree, fans should support little league teams.

Yeah it’s a really dumb thought.
Incompetence <> Indifference.
